Patrick Moran, the son of Democrat Congressman Jim Moran of Virginia, pleaded guilty today in District of Columbia Superior Court of assaulting his girlfriend.
The younger Moran had to resign as field director of his father’s re-election campaign in October when he was caught on an undercover video apparently encouraging vote fraud.
WashingtonCity Paper has the details of the Patrick Moran assault:
“Moran and his girlfriend were fighting outside 14th Street bar The Getaway around 1:23 a.m. on Dec. 1, according to a police report, over Moran talking to another woman at the bar. Suddenly, Moran allegedly slammed his girlfriend’s head into the bar’s metal trash can cage.
“After the attack, police described Moran’s girlfriend as ‘bleeding heavily from her nose and also observed that her nose and right eye were extremely swollen.’ One of the ambulance technicians who transported her to Howard University Hospital told police that Moran appeared to have broken her nose and given her a skull fracture under her right eye.”
Moran was originally charged with felony domestic violence assault. By pleading guilty to a lesser offense of simple assault, he avoided jail time.
NBC Channel 4 in Washington has the details on the plea deal:
“Moran was sentenced to 90 days in jail which was suspended by the judge, and one year of probation. If he violates his probation he will serve the 90 days. He must also enter a domestic violence intervention program, pay a $50 fine to a domestic violence program and complete 50 hours of community service.”
Congressman Moran, The Daily Caller reports, is a big supporter of the federal Violence Against Women Act. The congressman referred to his son, 23, and his girlfriend as “good kids” according to Washington City Paper, who “look forward to putting this embarrassing situation behind them.”
