Fifth Harmony’s Lauren Jauregui Goes After The Catholic Church

Fifth Harmony’s Lauren Jauregui came for Catholics who don’t support the LGBT community. On Sunday, July 9, she tweeted about the Catholic church’s problem with pedophilia. She made the tweet in response to the recent revelations of Cardinal George Pell, who has been hit with sex offense charges in Melbourne, Australia. The 76-year-old was charged with multiple sex offenses.

Lauren Jauregui tweeted, “I’m gonna need Catholics to stop preaching anti-gay sentiment with the amount of rampant pedophilia going on behind the scenes for years.”

One of Jaregui’s fans asked her why she was comparing pedophilia to being gay. Jauregui backed up her claims, stating that she was not correlating to the two.

“I’m saying there shouldn’t be any sort of condemning of one and condoning of the other. I’m aware not all feel this, but most do,” she added.

Lauren Jauregui came out as bisexual in November 2016 after Donald Trump won the U.S. election. She revealed her sexuality in a letter to Billboard. She has not been shy about her sexuality since. She recorded the song “Strangers” with fellow bisexual pop star Halsey, which is a “love song for the LGBTQ community.” She was even featured in a photo shoot with rumored then girlfriend Lucy Vives. Photographer Nicole Cartolano released the photos and spoke to MTV News about the project.

“Both girls trusted me to photograph them together as a sort of coming out, but they were nervous how their families would respond and the publicity they’d attract, especially from the Latin American community.”

Cartolano released the intimate photo series titled “Bare with Me,” on her website and Tumblr back in March 2017. The couple has since split, but they agreed to release the photos anyway.

Though Jauregui decided to come out, she still felt nervous talking about her sexuality. She even slammed the media for sexualizing her personal life and photo shoot. “Strangers” is one of those rare pop songs that talk about two women who share a fondness for one another. On June 9, Lauren Jauregui joined Halsey on the Today show to perform their same-sex duet in front of millions on live television.

It’s hard to find that kind of representation in music these days. Most pop stars, like Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez, are straight-laced when it comes to dating. However, Selena Gomez hinted towards liking women in interviews and her recent music video for “Bad Liar.” Halsey and Lauren Jauregui are those pop girls who will hopefully bring more inclusion to the music industry.
