Delonte West Possibly Headed To The Lakers [Report]

The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly considering signing former Mavericks guard Delonte West to fill in a gap in their banged up lineup.

With two-time MVP Steve Nash (leg) out for a least a couple more weeks and Steve Blake not set to return until January after undergoing surgery to repair an abdominal muscle, West could provide a much needed spark to a struggling Lakers club.

Marc Stein of ESPNwrites:

“No firm decisions made yet but Lakers, I’m told, ARE weighing pros and cons of creating roster spot to sign Delonte West to ease PG crisis.”

As it stands now, Chris Duhon and Derius Morris are filling in at the point guard spot. While Morris and Duhan are occasionally able to score a bucket or two, both players are have difficulty matching up defensively with opposing teams’ guards.

Bleacher Reports points out that this lack of defense became more obvious Tuesday night when Kyrie Irving dropped 28 points and dished 11 assists in his return to the Cleveland Cavaliers lineup.

West, who averaged 9.6 points, 3.2 assists, 1.3 steals for the Mavs last season, would be an instant upgrade on both the offensive and defensive end but it must be noted that he comes with baggage.

After a number of on and off court issues in 2012, the 29-year-old was ultimately waived by Dallas in October for multiple violations of the team’s conduct policy.

In his eight-year career, West has averaged nearly 10 points, 3.6 assists, 1.1 steals and three rebounds per contest.

In addition to West, Stein also said the Lakers were looking at two other players (Mike James and Jonny Flynn) and hadn’t ruled out the possibility of trading to acquire a point guard.
