Will We See Jack Pearson’s ‘Evil,’ ‘Dark’ Side On ‘This Is Us’ Season 2?

If you’ve spent the last season of This Is Us crying in front of your television screen, you’re in for a real treat during This Is Us Season 2. According to early reports from the set, Jack Pearson (played by Milo Ventimiglia) will be showing more of his “dark side” than ever before, shattering the notion that he’s the perfect husband and father.

Hall of Fame Magazine is reporting that This Is Us Season 2 will focus more on Jack’s flaw, and this is coming from none other than Ventimiglia himself. Ventimiglia said that the reason many people can’t fathom the fact that Jack isn’t perfect is because he’s dead, and as human beings, we tend to canonize those who are no longer living.

“I think it’s easy for people to find that perfection because he’s not around. There’s this respect that comes in death. I’ve always been interested in the flaws of him even though they might not be the most apparent.”

Ventimiglia went on to say that in the first season, he was shown as the perfect husband and father with only a few flaws (such as the drinking), but we got a glimpse into the troubled environment he came from during the season finale, when we saw his drunk father being verbally abusive to both him and his mother.

TV Guide also points out that This Is Us Season 2 should also focus on Jack’s “dark, evil side” so that we see the depths of his admittedly complex character.

The outlet points out that despite the fact that we’re led to believe that Jack is the “perfect father” and perfect man, he’s not only not perfect, but his flaws were there to see all along, especially in terms of him not being a good spouse to Rebecca (played by Mandy Moore).

“Let’s not forget that Jack was literally about to commit armed robbery before he met Rebecca. We don’t yet know what tamed his recklessness, but be sure it didn’t just go away. It’s a good bet that in Season 2, Jack’s unsavory traits will become more pronounced. It’s practically a requirement now, not just to help balance to his near-mythological perception but to give his inevitable death dramatic tension.”

But there are other things you need to know about This Is Us Season 2, according to Good Housekeeping Magazine.

For instance, we’ll be seeing more of the younger version of the so-called “Big Three” — Kevin, Kate, and Randall — and what it was like for them growing up. In addition, Sophie (played by Alexandra Breckenridge) — who is Kevin’s ex-wife that he’s now dating again — will also be in the show a lot more, and there will be more of a focus on her relationship with Kevin both in the past and in the present.

But most of all, said Good Housekeeping, we’ll learn how Jack died — and we’ll learn pretty close to when the show picks back up.

“‘One thing I can tell you, you will learn how Jack died in the first episode of Season 2,’ Mandy Moore told Larry King in an interview. ‘That’s what we’ve been told.'”
