Isabel Martinez: Georgia Mother Allegedly Stabbed Her Husband And Four Children Dead [Updated]

UPDATE [7/6/2017, 2:28 p.m. ET]: More details on this week’s Georgia stabbings, courtesy of the slain family’s neighbors, as cited by a CNN report.

[4:25 p.m. ET]: CNN”s subsequent update has identified the suspect as 33-year-old Isabel Martinez, who was charged with five counts of aggravated assault and five counts each of murder and malice murder, according to the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office.

[7/7/2017: 8:20 a.m. ET]: According to a report from Heavy citing the Gwinnett Police Twitter account, the victims were identified as Martin Romero, 33, and his children Isabela Martinez, 10; Dacota Romero, 7; Dillan Romero, 4; and Axel Romero, 2. 9-year-old Diana Romero suffered injuries in the attack, but survived and was taken to the hospital for treatment, where she is expected to stay for the next two to three weeks. A GoFundMe page was also set up by family relative Hallie Romero to raise funds for the five victims’ funeral expenses, as well as Diana’s medical costs.

Gwinnett County Cpl. Michele Pihera issued a second statement in the light of Isabel Martinez’s alleged crimes, stressing once again that praying for Diana Romero’s survival and recovery is currently more important than learning the possible motives behind the Georgia stabbing.

“What prompts a person to take the life of such innocent children and her spouse is something we may never understand. This is a horrendous crime not only for the victims but for the extended family, neighborhood and community. We are hoping and praying that the remaining victim survives his/her injuries and makes a full recovery.”

Original Report Below:

A woman from Loganville, Georgia allegedly stabbed her four children and her husband to death sometime between Wednesday and Thursday morning.

According to a report from Fox News, the woman, whose name has yet to be released by authorities, was arrested on Thursday morning, after police had responded to a stabbing at the Loganville home, located about 30 miles east of Atlanta. Names of the victims have also not been released, but the four child fatalities were all under the age of 10, while the father was in his mid-30s. A fifth child was hospitalized with serious injuries, Fox News added.

In quotes published by CBS News, Gwinnett County police Cpl. Michele Pihera stressed that a motive for the crime has yet to be established and that the mother is still being questioned, with no word as to whether she was injured when the crime took place. Pihera added that reports of the Georgia stabbings should not cause anyone to think that a “dangerous person” is currently at large.

“What her motivations are for committing this horrendous crime, we still don’t know.”

A final report on the children’s and the father’s cause of death has yet to be released, but early reports suggest that the five fatalities were attacked with a knife. No charges have formally been filed against the mother for her alleged actions.

Neighbors told WSB-TV Atlanta that the family had just recently moved to Georgia from Illinois, and the mother had reportedly been depressed due to the death of her father. It’s also been suggested by neighbors that the mother may have waited as long as 24 hours with the victims before police were called.

In a tweet earlier this morning, WSB-TV’s Liz Artz wrote that the family had prayed for the soul of the suspect’s father in church on Sunday, but there was no indication at the time that the woman would commit the alleged crime.

As of Thursday afternoon, more details emerged on the unnamed female suspect’s alleged behavior leading up to the Georgia stabbings. CNN cited Rafael Ramirez, a neighbor of the family, who said that the mother was “acting bizarre” and suffering from hallucinations since her father died close to three weeks ago. Another neighbor, Jim Hollandsworth, said that the family had relatives in the Logansville area, and had actually been living there for about three to four months.

According to a statement from local police, a woman had placed a call to 911 at 4:47 a.m. to report a stabbing in the area. Officers who answered the call had arrived at the scene and found the five dead bodies. It hasn’t been determined at this time whether the woman who placed the emergency call is the same mother suspected in the Georgia stabbings.
