Mexico City, Mexico (AHN) – The Mexican governent recently inked a deal approving 35 requests to test-plant genetically modified (GM) corn. According to a government statement the corn planting will be limited to a specific area and will be monitored closely by the government.

Albeit still in the test stage, the newly approved GM corn planting will be confined to closed areas where no native species of corn exist and will be forced to follow the country’s stringent ecological security laws.

The aforementioned statement issued by the departments of agriculture and environment went on to say necessary governmental agencies involved will be strictly monitoring the planting process. Opponents of the bio-tech corn planting include several Mexican environmental protection groups along with Greenpeace. The groups contend that the corn could adversely affect the country’s ecological diversity.

Mexican farmers are also protesting the plan saying that the more than 200 corn varieties in Mexico the country is known for could be threatened.

Published reports say that the Mexican government will for the time being allocate 194 hectares of land in six states to plant the genetically disputed corn crops.
