Angry Birds Movie, Summer 2016

Rovio Entertainment, creator of the popular game Angry Birds, confirmed today that they will be releasing an Angry Birds 3D CG-animated feature film in the summer of 2016. This announcement came on the third anniversary of the release of the popular game.

Rovio will be working with producer John Cohen, producer of Despicable Me. David Maisel was named executive producer of the film. Maisel was also executive producer of the hit film Iron Man.

Angry Birds is the creation of Finnish game developer Rovio Entertainment. The concept of the game is to use a slingshot to release small birds with various “abilities” and special features. The birds are propelled into structures, some quite complex, in the effort to abolish little green pigs who have stolen eggs from the birds. While the concept seems simple, the game has grown to include countless levels of increasingly difficult game play as well as numerous special editions and themes. Angry Birds has joined forces with creators of the 20th Century Fox animated film Rio, and more recently with Star Wars, implementing details from the films to enhance the gaming experience.

Mikael Hed, CEO of Rovio Entertainment, said:

“John’s an exceptionally talented producer, and we’re delighted to have him join the flock. With John’s hands-on producer background and David´s expertise in establishing and running his own successful studio, these two are the dream team for making a movie outside the studio system. Both professionals have the ideal skills and vision to achieve incredible things.”

Rovio reported reported total revenues of €75.4m (£60.8m) for 2011 from the Angry Birds game.
