‘Teen Mom OG’: MTV Responds To Ryan Edwards’ Impaired Driving In Season Finale

MTV has responded to criticism over Ryan Edwards’ impaired driving in the most recent episode of Teen Mom OG. During the season finale on Monday, June 26, Ryan was shown falling asleep at the steering wheel while driving with his fiancee, Mackenzie Standifer, in the passenger seat on the way to their wedding. MTV came under heavy criticism, with many fans asking why the network did not intervene to stop Edwards from driving under the influence.

MTV has responded to the shocking footage in a statement released on Wednesday, June 28, according to Us Weekly. The network insisted that it does not “condone driving under the influence,” and that they had not been aware of Ryan’s condition before he took the wheel.

“MTV does not condone driving under the influence. Ryan’s erratic behavior was due to actions that he took without anyone’s prior knowledge.”

The shocking scene that caused the uproar on social media showed Ryan Edwards and Mackenzie Standifer heading to their wedding. As Edwards drove along, Standifer looked tense and anxious, eyeing him suspiciously. She was forced to tap and prod him awake multiple times. Edward looked dazed and sleepy, shutting his eyes behind the wheels. At one point Standifer had to reach across from the passenger seat to take control of the steering wheel and straighten the car on the road.

“Why are you swerving?” she asked.

Edwards, looking dazed, claimed that he was forced to shut his eyes due to the sunlight reaching his eyes.

She then reached toward the camera and shut it off, but the audio continued and she could be heard asking him whether he had taken Xanax again.

“I don’t have any,” he mumbled weakly.

“You did,” she insisted.

“I put that on my kid’s life,” he swore, denying that he had taken drugs.

Some fans who saw the disturbing footage blamed MTV, saying the network should have intervened despite the fact that the footage was filmed using a dashboard camera and that a cameraman was not in the car at the time to intervene.

“@MTV you guys need to hold Ryan Edwards responsible for driving while intoxicate.”

“When Ryan Edwards from Teen Mom kills a family while MTV knowingly lets him drive intoxicated on drugs while they film it, they won’t care,” a horrified viewer commented on Twitter.

Some fans also blamed Standifer, saying she should not have allowed Edwards to get behind the wheel.

“MTV & Mackenzie let Ryan drive high. After the first 5 mins one of them should’ve told him to pull over.”

MTV’s response to the incident comes after Ryan Edwards released a statement on Monday, apologizing for the incident and revealing that he was seeking professional help for drug addiction.

“A little over 30 days ago, I made the decision to check myself into a rehabilitation facility. I am back home now doing well, and life could not be better. Without the support of my wife and parents I would not have been able to do this. Thank you all for your well wishes.”

Standifer and Maci Bookout, who shares a seven-year-old son, Bentley, with Edwards, will address his drug addiction and his plans for recovery in part one of the Teen Mom OG reunion airing next week, according to Us Weekly.
