Jenson Button Sews Up Formula One Title

Sau Paulo, Brazil (AHN) – Jenson Button didn’t finish on the podium but he finished well enough to wrap up the Formula One Championship, and Brawn GP won the constructor’s crown in its inaugural season.
The 29-year-old Button finished fifth in the Brazilian Grand Prix, which was good enough to give him the title with one race still remaining in the season.
While Red Bull’s Mark Webber won the race, Button crossed the finish line singing “We Are The Champions” and gave Britain back-to-back F1 titles for the first time since Graham Hill and Jackie Stewart won in 1968-69.
Brit Lewis Hamilton won the championship last year.
Pole sitter and title contender Rubens Barrichello was the crowd favorite but he finished eighth and contender Sebastian Vettel ran fourth.
Button holds a 15-point lead over Vettel heading to the season-ending event Nov. 1 at Abu Dhabi. Button was able to sew up the title prematurely on the strength of winning six of the season’s first seven races and running consistently well the rest of the season. Robert Kubica ran second in the race for BMW Sauber and Hamilton finished third for McLaren.
