Study Suggests Most Men Don’t Wash Hands

London, England (AHN) – Hand washing is the cheapest way to preventing many illnesses, but a new study out of the United Kingdom suggests that people are more likely to wash their hands if they are shamed into it.
The researchers said that they analyzed the behavior of about a quarter of a million people and found that only 32 percent of men washed their hands with soap.
Women were better, with almost 64 percent using soap when washing their hands.
The researchers note in a statement that a million people die every year from diarrhoeal disease and respiratory infections that could be prevented from soap and water.
The findings were released in coordination of “Global Handwashing Day” in England.
The study appears in the American Journal of Public Health.
