WWE Rumors: Finn Balor Getting Involved In The Universal Title Picture At SummerSlam?

Finn Balor failed to become the number one contender for the WWE Universal Championship at Extreme Rules when he and three other superstars lost to Samoa Joe in a Fatal 5-Way Match. Balor does not have a feud at the moment since Bray Wyatt unexpectedly moved on to battle Seth Rollins. However, the latest WWE rumors suggest that Balor might end up getting a Universal Title Match at SummerSlam.

As recapped by WWE.com, Finn Balor was seconds away from winning the Fatal 5-Way Match before Samoa Joe came from behind and choked out with the Coquina Clutch. Balor has been noticeably absent from Monday Night Raw this past couple of weeks. The Demon is reportedly not injured and he is just promoting the WWE’s tour of Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

The WWE has been changing plans in the past couple of months due to the declining ratings and the injury to Braun Strowman. Balor was already penciled to face Bray Wyatt in a feud but it was scrapped with Wyatt now facing Seth Rollins at Great Balls of Fire. Finn is left without an opponent but the WWE seems to have big plans for him at SummerSlam.

According to Sportskeeda, the WWE was planning a Fatal 4-Way Match for the Universal Championship at SummerSlam involving Brock Lesnar, Finn Balor, Seth Rollins and Braun Strowman. However, the injury to Strowman forced the company to change its plans with Joe facing Lesnar for the title at Great Balls of Fire while Rollins moves on to a program with Wyatt.

The report added that the current plan for the WWE Universal Championship at SummerSlam is going to be involving Finn Balor. The former champ is not expected to regain the title anytime soon since Brock Lesnar is rumored to be holding it until WrestleMania 34 when he drops it to Roman Reigns.

However, the scrapped feud between Balor and Wyatt is now expected to be a long-term storyline later this year because the WWE is not interested in making it a one-off match between the two mysterious superstars. The WWE have already teased the feud with Wyatt costing Balor a shot at the Intercontinental Championship about a month ago

On the other hand, the winner of the WWE Universal Title Match at Great Balls of Fire is expected to be Brock Lesnar, as reported by Dave Meltzer of The Wrestling Observer. Joe vs. Lesnar is going to be a one-time thing and it’s not going to be the main program of the summer.

The only remaining problem is how the WWE will incorporate Braun Strowman, who has been reportedly cleared to return from his elbow injury, to their SummerSlam plans. Strowman vs. Lesnar is a salivating clash on paper but the addition of Finn Balor to make it a Triple Threat Match is an even better idea.

In an interview with News.com.au, Finn Balor was asked about his thoughts on the WWE Universal Championship, the title he lost due to a shoulder injury. Balor insisted that he wants a rematch for the title and he even hinted that it might be against the winner of the Samoa Joe vs. Brock Lesnar match at Great Balls of Fire.

“Perhaps considering the fact I never actually lost the Universal Title, maybe at some point, I’ll be granted a rematch — maybe against Samoa Joe or Brock Lesnar.”

It should be noted that these are just WWE rumors at the moment and nothing has been confirmed. The WWE is known for changing their plans on a regular basis. Finn Balor deserves to a shot at the WWE Universal Championship because he never lost it in a match. Balor is a household name already and he needs to have a big match at SummerSlam.
