‘How I Met Your Mother’ Star Didn’t Like Series Finale Either, Talks Revival Possibilities

How I Met Your Mother was a comedy television series beloved by millions, and although it ended its run back in March of 2014, new fans are being created each day thanks to the show running in syndication and streaming on sites like Netflix. While the show was hilarious with interesting storytelling, fans do seem to have one big problem with the series, and that is the final episode.

The How I Met Your Mother finale ended with Ted relaying the story of his wedding and marriage to Tracy, to their two children. In the finale it was revealed that Ted married Tracy also known as The Mother, Marshall and Lily ended up with three children, Barney and Robin got divorced, Barney went on to have a daughter, and Robin moved away to focus on her budding national news career. However, it wasn’t a happy ending for Ted and Tracy.

The HIMYM finale ended with the revelation that Tracy had gotten sick and died, leaving Ted and their two children behind. Ted finishes telling the story to his children, and they call him out for still being in love with Robin. Ted tries to deny it, but his children push him to call Robin. Instead, he puts on a suit and grabs a blue french horn and takes it to her window like he did after he first met her. Fans were very vocal in speaking out about the way the series ended, and now one of the stars of the show is in agreement with disgruntled viewers.

Alyson Hannigan, who played Lily Aldrin on the show, says she doesn’t think Barney and Robin should have ever gotten married. In fact, she didn’t want Barney to get married at all.

“I didn’t think Barney should have ever gotten married,” Hannigan told News.Com.Au. “I liked Barney and Robin. But in my heart, I always wanted her with Ted. I just feel they [Barney and Robin] shouldn’t have gotten married.”

Alyson also dished on how the How I Met Your Mother series finale had been cut way down, with many scenes missing. The actress says that the table read with all of the now deleted scenes felt “right,” and when she watched the final show, she couldn’t believe how much they had cut out of the episode.

“I was bummed they didn’t just make it a two-hour season-ender, so they would get to show certain parts [that were cut]. The table read for the finale was so good, so right, but it was also like 14 hours long. So when I actually saw the final version of the show, I was like ‘they cut out everything!’

“It just seemed too quick. Obviously it was a tear-jerker, but with all the stuff that got cut out it was too fast…like ‘OK, now we’re going to find out the mom’s dead, then suddenly, OK — he’s with Robin now’, and you’re just like, ‘wait, what happened?!'”

In addition to speaking out about the way the finale was handled, Alyson Hannigan also revealed that she would reprise her role as Lily for a How I Met Your Mother revival or reunion. With news of revivals seeming to hit the news at a rapid pace, fans of former television series like HIMYM, Friends, and others are ready to see the beloved characters back in action. While a Mother reunion doesn’t seem likely in the near future, fans are holding out hope that the cast will reunite again.

“How I Met Your Mother — I would do it again in a heartbeat. It was so much fun going to work every day…we laughed and laughed. It was just pure, lovely fun. We all appreciated it while we had it — we knew how special it was. I don’t think that always happens,” Hannigan said.

What are your thoughts on Alyson Hannigan’s comments on the How I Met Your Mother series finale and a possible revival?
