Chris Brown Talks Rihanna Beating In ‘Welcome To My Life’: He Was Ready To Propose Before Assault

Chris Brown has opened up about the infamous Rihanna abuse incident in his Welcome to my Life documentary, going into detail on what caused him to physically assault the Barbadian singer inside his car on that fateful night back in 1991. To top it off, he also revealed that he had been planning to propose to her before the fight happened.

As reported by Hollywood Life, Chris Brown was head over heels in love with Rihanna that he was ready to pop the question to her. In his Welcome to My Life docu, Brown recalls the moment he fell in love with the “Diamond” singer, revealing that he was the first one to say “I love you.” The couple kept their relationship private for eight months. Not long after their musical collaboration at the 20017 VMAs, Brown and Rihanna went public with their romance.

But Chris Brown had a big secret: he hooked up with another woman during the early stages of his relationship with Rihanna. RiRi had her suspicions and confronted him about it, but Brown lied, telling her that his relationship with the other woman was purely professional.

As their romance became even more serious, Mr. Brown decided to relieve his guilt by telling Rihanna the truth. Coming clean, however, had backfired as RiRi became increasingly more jealous, leading to more fights between the couple. Before long, the growing friction between them came to a head at Clive Davis’ 2009 Grammys pre-party when Chris Brown’s former fling approached him and Rihanna at their table to say hi. Rihanna completely lost it, and after Chris got her to calm down a little, they left the party. Their quarrel, however, was far from over, as Brown got into a nasty altercation that left Rihanna bruised and battered. Rihanna filed assault charges against Chris, and a few days after the beating incident, Chris turned himself into the LAPD for questioning.

Surprisingly, Chris Brown and Rihanna started dating again in 2013, before finally separating for good several months later.

Two years after their second and final breakup, Rihanna opened up about the stormy relationship, saying that she was “a hundred percent” sure she could change Brown, as reported by E! News.

“I was very protective of him. I felt that people didn’t understand him. Even after… But you know, you realize after a while that in that situation you’re the enemy. You want the best for them, but if you remind them of their failures, or if you remind them of bad moments in their life, or even if you say I’m willing to put up with something, they think less of you — because they know you don’t deserve what they’re going to give. And if you put up with it, maybe you are agreeing that you [deserve] this, and that’s when I finally had to say, ‘Uh-oh, I was stupid thinking I was built for this.’ Sometimes you just have to walk away.”

On May 5, Chris Brown received a pleasant surprise when Rihanna phoned him up to greet him on his 28th birthday. Citing an insider who was present at the singer’s birthday celebration, Hollywood Life reports that Rihanna went the extra mile to make her former boyfriend feel that he is loved by singing to him the traditional “Happy Birthday” song. The call reportedly rendered Brown almost speechless.

“His eyes lit up and he had the biggest smile on his face. He was bobbing his head when she was singing and when she was done he was like wow. They talked briefly and she told him I love you,” said the source.

If the above report is anything to go by, there’s no doubt that Chris Brown and Rihanna still care deeply about each other despite their tumultuous past.
