NFL Player Wants Fan Drunk For Sunday's Game

An NFL player wants fans drunk for Sunday’s game, leading to some strange reactions and questions of whether the league will discipline the player.

The player who made the odd request is Chad Greenway, a linebacker for the surprising Minnesota Vikings. With the team standing at 6-6, Sunday’s matchup against the Bears could be a make-or-break game for the Vikings playoff hopes.

As Deadspin noted, the fact that the NFL player wants fans to get drunk came off as odd advice.

“We have to play accordingly and our fans have to show up accordingly, which we know they will,” Greenway said after Sunday’s loss at Green Bay. “Hopefully, they’re super- duper drunk. … So drink liquor, not beer.”

The Star-Tribune noted that the request that from the NFL player for fans to get drunk isn’t exactly a PSA. Greenway said the fact that it’s a 12 pm kickoff doesn’t change his thoughts about fans getting soused.

“Yeah, I would say morning drinking,” Greenway said. “Why not? You could pull an all-nighter. Then you’d have the drunk, tired guys who will really be obnoxious.”

Greenway later walked back his comments, ESPN noted. In an interview on “The Waddle & Silvy Show” on ESPN 1000 in Chicago, the NFL player said his want for fans to get drunk “went a little far.”

“Obviously, I could have used some more responsible words,” Greenway said. “I think the people that know me, the beat writers included, know that I said that sort of tongue-in-cheek.

“I just wanted the fans at home to be loud like they always are. I think just trying to drive that point home I probably got a little loose with my words. Obviously, I should have been a little more responsible with it. It was said, so what do you do?”

Do you think the league should discipline the NFL player who wants fans to get drunk?

Ah, no. People, if legal drinking age, are allowed to get drunk before games. Tailgating is a tradition so people get drunk anyways. Its not as if he said go drink and drive or commit any sort of criminal act.

God SHUT UP ALREADY! Just because he is a player doesn't mean he isn't a fan. Why would anyone want to punish a man for having the ability to keep his sense of humor. GREENWAY FOR MAYOR!

Agreed with the guy below me. Who cares? Isn't the NFL only about money anyways? Why would they punish a player who asks the fans to spend more money on insanely high-priced drinks…unless the punishment is a fine in which case it's anyone' call.
