Jill Duggar & Derick Dillard Reveal Baby Name, Do Things Differently From Jessa Duggar & Ben Seewald

Jill Duggar and Derick Dillard have revealed the baby name that they’ve chosen for their second son. The casual manner in which the couple decided to share the moniker with the public is a lot different than the much flashier baby name announcements favored by Jessa Duggar and Ben Seewald.

On Monday, a fan on the Duggar Family News: Life Is Not All Pickles and Hairspray Facebook page noticed something surprising about Derick Dillard’s Twitter account. He has recently updated his bio to include the baby name that he and Jill Duggar have chosen for their second son, and he added it with absolutely no fanfare.

“I seek to glorify my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, with my whole life. Husband to @jillmdillard; papa to Israel David and Samuel Scott. Go Pokes!” his bio reads.

You’d almost think that Jill Duggar and Derick Dillard’s second baby boy has been born already, but this isn’t the case. According to People, Jill’s due date isn’t until next month, so it will be a few more weeks before fans get to meet little Samuel Scott Dillard. Jill and her husband have made no special announcements about choosing their baby name, but they did previously hint that “Samuel” was in the running. When she and Derick were still living on the mission field in El Salvador, Jill revealed that the locals were calling her bun in the oven “Samuelito.”

The low-key way Jill and Derick announced their baby name will surprise Duggar fans who are used to being left in suspense each time Jessa Duggar gives birth. As Today reports, Jessa and her husband, Ben Seewald, didn’t reveal the name of their second child, Henry Wilberforce Seewald, until a week after he was born, and they filmed a special baby name announcement video for TLC once they finally settled on a moniker. They also waited a week to share the name of their first son, Spurgeon Elliot Seewald.

According to Baby Center, it’s actually not that unusual for a couple to reveal the baby name they’ve picked out ahead of their child’s birth. A majority of parents polled—64 percent, to be exact—said that they shared their chosen name with their family and friends during pregnancy. Just eight percent of parents said that they pulled a Jessa and Ben by waiting a few days or longer after their babies arrived before settling on a name.

Unlike Jessa and Ben, Jill Duggar and Derick Dillard seem to prefer being more mainstream when it comes to baby names; the missionaries also aren’t being quite as creative with their baby name choices as the younger couple. “Samuel” is such a common moniker that it has already been chosen as the middle name of one of Samuel Scott Dillard’s uncles, 14-year-old Justin Samuel. However, it’s unlikely that Jill decided to name her son after her younger brother. As reported by the Inquisitr, she and Derick previously said that they aren’t going to stick with a letter theme like Jill Duggar’s parents did, but they had discussed a different theme: names inspired by the Bible.

“We are not going to do the letter theme,” Jill said. “We may pick another theme… We’re talking about family names and Bible names.”

Jill Duggar and Derick Dillard’s first child, Israel David, definitely has a Biblical name, so maybe the parents will continue this theme from now on. It’s also been noted that both “Samuel” and Israel” end with the letters “el,” so this is another theme possibility.

Perhaps Samuel’s middle name is meant to pay tribute to one of Derick’s family members. According to the obituary for Derick’s grandfather on the Oklahoman, his grandmother’s maiden name is “Scott.” Another possibility? Jill chose the name because her family has grown so close to 19 Kids and Counting director of photography Scott Enlow. Enlow once told TLC that he feels like a part of the Duggar family, and E! News reports that Jana and Jill Duggar helped deliver his daughter on an episode of 19 Kids and Counting.
