‘The Walking Dead’: Steven Yeun Finally Opens Up About Leaving The Show, Glenn’s Shocking Death

The Walking Dead hasn’t been the same since Glenn’s big death in the Season 7 premiere. Now, actor Steven Yeun is weighing in on life after the show a year after he filmed the scene that shifted the series in a new direction.

According to Comic Book, Steven Yeun, who played the character of Glenn Rhee on The Walking Dead for 7 Seasons, appeared at Walker Stalker Con in Nashville, Tennessee over the weekend. Yeun, revealed the impact that leaving the show has had on his life, saying that it was “hard” to leave the cast, which he referred to as “family,” after seven years together. However, Steven added that he understood that Glenn’s death needed to happen to start off a whole new storyline for Season 7 and beyond.

“It’s hard to leave family after seven years of being together but also it feels very complete. Something needed to happen to propel this next season.”

Now, one year after leaving The Walking Dead, Steven Yeun says that the fans have been wonderful towards him. Yeun says that fans often tell him that they miss the character of Glenn, adding that he doesn’t think there’s ever been a character like that on television before.

“It’s been over a year and everybody is still so cool. They’re so sweet and they’re very sad about the death but that’s awesome. I think the coolest part about the death in and of itself is, I don’t know if there’s ever been a character like Genn before in any facet,in the way he walks and the way he talks, … to have died and to have in death such a lasting impact. I think it’s like awesome. I think if Glenn were to continue, he could at some point fade into the back but there’s this great explanation point.”

Despite being killed off The Walking Dead, Steven Yeun is happy to have been apart of the show and even reveals what he believes would have become of Glenn if he had not met his wife, Maggie. Steven says he believes Glenn would have died without Maggie in his life because before her he would put himself in dangerous situations and not think twice about it. However, once he fell in love with Maggie, he was thinking for two people instead of just himself.

“I bet Glenn also would have died. He wanted to prove himself quite a bit. He wanted to go out like a hero. He would’ve put himself in dangerous situations like he always has and eventually that would have caught up to him.”

As for Yeun’s relationship with his former on-screen wife, Lauren Cohan, Steven says that the two are “really tight,” adding that their living situation, as well as their close work relationship, helped them to develop a close friendship with one another.

“I think it’s a bond that develops It’s a trust that develops. Trust will get you through it not because you’re into them but because there’s also other people that are watching you do it.”

Also, Steven Yeun also reveals that while some Walking Dead fans may blame Daryl Dixon for Glenn’s death, that “it wasn’t his fault,” and that he doesn’t believe Daryl should get the blame for the very “sad” moment on the show.
