Scarlett Johansson Says Talking About Reproductive Rights Shouldn’t Be Taboo

Scarlett Johansson recently went on the record sharing her political beliefs, though they haven’t been a hit with all of her fans. In an interview with Cosmopolitan, which hit newsstands this week, she got candid about how she feels about reproductive rights in addition to her feelings on the Trump family. The star says she’s aware that by doing this, she’s bound to lose some followers and ruffle some feathers with fans, but she feels like having her voice heard is incredibly important.

She opened up to the magazine about the risks of sharing her political beliefs and being a public figure.

“Whenever you speak publicly, it’s always a risk, right? Maybe you’ll lose some followers. But if you have something to say, it can be really impactful.”

Scarlett Johansson also went on to say that she knows voicing her opinion is a bit of a luxury, but she hopes her own daughter is able to find her voice to use in public and raise it when necessary.

“I hope my daughter finds her voice and feels like she can engage anyone in any number of topics. I grew up in an environment that encouraged activism, so I never thought about the effect it would have on my career at any stage. But I know it’s a luxury, and not everybody has that luxury,” she said.

Johansson was raised in New York City where, although she describes her family as having “little money,” they were still politically active. She was surrounded by artists from a young age, having attended the Professional Children’s School in Manhattan until she graduated from high school. Her grandparents are immigrants from Poland and Belarus and her father is from Copenhagen, Denmark–all of which may have shaped the way she feels about expressing herself publicly when it comes to her politics.

One thing Scarlett Johansson is incredibly passionate about is ending the stigma that surrounds women’s bodies, women’s sexuality, and reproductive health issues.

“There’s no reason we shouldn’t be talking about our reproductive rights,” she told Cosmopolitan.

“They’re something we have to fight for and continue to protect. There’s nothing icky about talking about that stuff. Of course, it’s private and it’s your body, but we should take the stigma away”

She went on to discuss the taboo of women enjoying sex, which is still an issue to contend with in 2017.

“When women talk about enjoying sex, it’s almost forbidden. Just having a healthy sexual attitude, you are labeled as loose, wild, a slut. You have no morals, and you’re seen as some kind of sexual deviant or someone who can’t be in a monogamous relationship. The minute you talk about enjoying yourself, being curious, that is still taboo,” she said to the magazine.

She also said that she thought Ivanka Trump should step forward and discuss more about reproductive rights, but she understands her hesitation to do so due to her role within her family.

According to a source, Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost are a romantically linked item.

“They’re not in a relationship, but they have fun together. They like each other, but it’s not exclusive – at least not at this point,” a source close to Johansson told the Daily Mail about her relationship with the comedian. The pair were also spotted making out in full view of a group of people after filming an episode of Saturday Night Live.

The mother of one is enjoying the time with Jost while she is undergoing a stressful divorce with Romain Dauriac. She filed for divorce on March 7, 2017, and the two are still undergoing negotiations and legal issues.
