Detroit, MI — Police are investigating the shooting deaths of three men and one woman, all in their 20s, at a home on Detroit’s east side. Police are still searching for the suspects.
Twenty-two-year-old Janetta Harris and 28-year-old Jason Koester were among those killed Tuesday evening. The Wayne County Examiner’s office said family members identified the last two victims as 16-year-old Shawn Bender and 34-year-old Dyrelle Davis.
The body of Koester was discovered by his girlfriend, Julianna Kabat, Tuesday night when she entered the room they had been renting from Harris and her boyfriend.
“I thought he was sleeping,” she said. “I said, ‘Baby wake up,’ and there was blood everywhere. I was holding him. Then I walked into the other room and everyone else was dead.”
Kabat was returning home from getting something to eat when she discovered the bodies.
“I should have been with there with them, but I went out to eat,” she said. “He’s all I have. I love him so much, and he’s not here — he’s gone.”
Investigators are still trying to determine a motive, and Sgt. Eren Stephens said she could not confirm allegations that robbers posed as police officers and shot the four in a robbery attempt.
“We have no information on a raid being done at that place,” Stephens said. “Right now, we’re still looking — we don’t know.”
Harris’ cousin, Michael Johnson, said she was a student at Denby High School and was preparing to go back to school next semester.
“She was a beautiful person,” Johnson said. “I hope whoever did it gets what they deserve, and I don’t mean no jail time.”
Koester, a graduate of Lakeview High School, moved into the home owned by Harris’ father Saturday.
“Jason was in the wrong place at the wrong time,” his sister, Andrea, said. “I hope he was asleep.”
Harris’ best friend and neighbor, 35-year-old Elodia Ortiz, couldn’t stop crying when she heard the news of the shooting.
“It just doesn’t make no sense,” she said. “She was just a baby.”
