New ‘Overwatch’ Lore Details Events At The Horizon Lunar Colony, Likely Teasing Upcoming Content

In Overwatch, most players are familiar with Winston, the highly intelligent gorilla with sophisticated gadgets. The character hails from the Horizon Lunar Colony, where he was kept with other genetically modified gorillas. As the story goes, the other gorillas eventually revolted against the scientists experimenting on them and overthrew the colony. According to the game’s character page, Winston managed to craft a rocket taking him to Earth where he would later join other Overwatch agents.

Today, a new post by Atlas News is now on the game’s official site revealing communications between scientists on the Horizon Lunar Colony before the gorillas mutinied. In fact, Lucheng Interstellar still has access to the colony’s databases and systems now. The Atlas News post then goes on to picture several messages between the Horizon Lunar Colony’s scientists just days before they were killed.

The intercompany messages point out that the gorillas were definitely upset over their genetic therapy. New information is also included in the lore when it is mentioned that a smaller specimen was tested on alongside the gorillas. One smaller specimen in particular is named Hammond, who went missing just before the riot. In the Atlas News post, Lucheng Interstellar states that tracking systems are still running on the Horizon Lunar Colony and nearly all animals are actively being tracked. Only Winston and Hammond are unaccounted for, and Winston is a known operative for Overwatch. Hammond, on the other hand, is missing.

The new lore is definitely leading up to some type of reveal for Overwatch players. A previous Atlas News post introduced Efi Oladele, a young inventor fascinated with robotics. After the interview was posted on February 21, Orisa was soon revealed as Oladele’s creation. On March 21, the latest hero, the tank Orisa, was added to the game. Similar posts were added to the official site before Sombra officially released late last year.

Although the missing Hammond specimen heavily points players in the direction of a new hero, the background and lore surrounding the Horizon Lunar Colony could point to a new map on the moon. Either way, the time between lore-friendly Atlas News posts and their connected content is not long anymore. Overwatch players could see something related to the Horizon Lunar Colony in as little as a month.

Until then, Overwatch players still have the current event to enjoy. Players and developers are celebrating the game’s one-year anniversary now with the Overwatch Anniversary event. The event is underway now with an end date of June 12. The Anniversary event includes new Anniversary Loot Boxes for players that level up or purchase boxes during the event.

Over 100 new items are up for grabs during the event, as reported by the Inquisitr. Unlike other events, the Anniversary event includes items for every single character. Although 11 legendary skins are available, each and every hero has a new looping dance emote. Unfortunately, these emotes are exclusive to Anniversary event boxes, meaning players will have to earn them now before the boxes are retired.

Players can pick up new legendary skins for Bastion, D.Va, Genji, Hanzo, Lúcio, Mei, Pharah, Solider: 76, Symmetra, Tracer, and Zarya for a limited time. Anniversary boxes also include new voice lines, sprays, and player icons. Each Anniversary box opened is guaranteed to include at least one Anniversary item.

With the Anniversary event wrapping up on June 12 and the next competitive season starting in a matter of days, players have plenty to accomplish before the next big addition to the game. New heroes and new maps are definitely coming to the game in the future, but only time will tell what exactly the events of the Horizon Lunar Colony have to do with the new and unknown Overwatch addition.
