‘Game Of Thrones’ Season 7: Highlights Of The Heart-Pounding Trailer

The recently released Game of Thrones Season 7 trailer continues in the tradition created by previous seasons of the epic saga by giving fans almost two minutes packed with scenes that evoke a wide range of emotions. Action to get your heart pounding and adrenaline flowing, a kiss, fighting words from Cersei, and so much about “the great war.”

It’s all about that war now, and by all appearances it’s going to be quite a ride. Everyone will have to align themselves with a contender for the Iron Throne, but the larger war will be against the White Walkers.

There is so much to digest in this latest trailer, so much that is sure to get the blood of every Game of Thrones fan pumping, not to mention anxiously tuned in come July 16, the date of the Season 7 premier.

The last two seasons of Game of Thrones will be shorter than previous seasons. Actors and showrunners have been telling us over the last several months that the quality of story and the action as the HBO hit finishes its run will more than make up for the lower episode count. If the trailer is any indication, they are absolutely right. Let’s take a look at some of the highlights.

At the close of Season 6, Daenerys Targaryen and her crew were heading for Westeros with one goal in mind. As she says in the trailer, “I was born to rule the Seven Kingdoms, and I will.”

Her determination is clear, but if she is to sit on the Iron Throne, she’ll have to take down the person currently occupying that coveted seat – Cersei. The fight between these two strong and power-hungry women is sure to be legendary. The new Game of Thrones trailer has shots of Dany arriving at Dragonstone and then shots of her sitting on the throne there and apparently talking war strategy with Tyrion. Khaleesi means business as shown in two shots in the trailer – one of the Unsullied charging into the unguarded Casterly Rock which, as noted by Nerd Core Movement, is the family seat of the Lannisters and a second of the Dothraki and Unsullied armies in full force in a battle, presumably against the Lannister army.

It’s no surprise that Cersei Lannister will put it all on the line this season in order to hold on and defeat challengers to the throne. Whether you love her or hate her, you can’t deny her determination to fight for and defend whatever she cares about. With all of her children gone, as well as her father, she is as ruthless as she has ever been. The new Game of Thrones trailer opens with her acknowledging the enemies surrounding her. She then tells Jaime that they are the last Lannisters. Fans think of Tyrion just as an image of him watching a dragon fly appears on screen, and Cersei says, “The last ones who count.” It’s a reminder that among the wars that will take place this season is the one between her and Tyrion. She uttered this famous line in Season 1 – “When you play the game of thrones, you win, or you die. There is no middle ground.”

Will she kill her own brother when he stands in the way of her holding onto the throne? She’s bound to try, but among the questions in the minds of Game of Thrones fans at the close of last season is one about Jaime’s current loyalty. Does he still support his lover/sister sitting on the throne or does he see her going off the rails? If caught between Cersei and Tyrion, what will he do? Will he save her life it comes down to it? Or will he let his sister kill his brother?

Of course we can’t talk about Game of Thrones without talking about Jon Snow. He’s gone from the Stark bastard to the King of the North. He has previously been told that he is capable of doing great things with a power that he doesn’t want to acknowledge, but he has also always had a strong moral compass and has been driven to do what is right in his mind. In a recent interview with Esquire, he commented on the last two seasons of Game of Thrones and the position in which Jon Snow finds himself, a statement with which many fans agree.

Thrones can be used as a metaphor way too much, but if there’s one truth, I think, it’s that people who really desire power are the people who shouldn’t have it. Maybe Jon’s the one person who should have it, because he’s not looking for it.”

The fan theory that Jon is the child of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark has been confirmed. This makes him a legitimate heir to the throne, a fact that will be a central story line as the remainder of GOT plays out. He has garnered support and will be seeking more support as the war with the White Walkers draws near. He remains, however, a reluctant leader. The new trailer includes a shot of a scene in which it seems Snow has caught on to Littlefinger’s game and makes his anger toward him clear as he takes him by the neck. Another one includes one of multiple battle scenes that we’re hoping will be as awesome as we imagine. In it we see Jon running alongside Tormund, a shot that, as the Hollywood Reporter noted, is reminiscent of the episode titled “Hardhome,” which featured an amazing faceoff that pitted him and the Wildings against the Night King and the White Walkers. Talk about heart-pounding scenes!
