Ubisoft’s tropical themed, open-world first-person shooter, Far Cry 3, is now available worldwide, and we imagine that a good number of you have already immersed yourself in the game’s pirate-laden world. But if you were holding off on purchasing it until you heard from the critics, we’ve got you covered.

Based on what critics are saying, it sounds like it’s well worth your time and money to pick up Far Cry 3. Although not without its issues — and disappointments — critics overall seem very impressed with the game’s vast open world, its story, and the gameplay itself.

Below is a selection of Far Cry 3 reviews from various outlets, ordered from lowest score to highest. If you’ve played the game yourself, feel free to sound off with your thoughts in the comments section below.

Destructoid – 9/10 (Read full review)

“One of those rare games where I feel no mode has been damaged by the inclusion of any others, Far Cry 3 is a well-rounded package that provides a mass of content clearly produced by developers who cared deeply about what they were doing. Far Cry 3 is going to be the last major mainstream release of 2012, and after quite a spotty year, I can at least say this industrious triad of amusements ends the past 12 months on a high note.”

PC Gamer – 89/100 (Read full review)

“The original Far Cry‘s developers Crytek used to describe that game’s philosophy as ‘veni, vidi, vici’: you show up, you scout out the situation, and you decide how to conquer it. Ubisoft kept the Far Cry name, and Crytek tried to stay true to its spirit in the Crysis games. But only Far Cry 3 really feels focused on doing that concept justice.”

Joystiq – 4.5/5 (Read full review)

“The open-ended, unstated and emergent elements of Far Cry 3 make it a unique shooter among this year’s campaigns, while formalized character and equipment progression provide a directed thrust to your exotic antics. It has excellent, explicit design layered on top of system-based chaos – which is a fancy way of saying that just about everything in Far Cry 3 feels like a reward.”

Eurogamer – 10/10 (Read full review)

“In the past, Far Cry’s vision of a first-person shooter RPG where you explore, master and then control your environment has always been more seductive on paper than any of its developers have managed to deliver on disc. Far Cry 3 changes all that. For me, this is the new apex predator of open-world shooters. Hunt it down as soon as you can.”
