Working After Retirement May Be Good For You

Miami, FL (AHN) – New research suggests that working a temporary or part time job after retirement could keep older people healthier.

The researchers, with the University of Maryland, used data from 12,189 people ages 51 to 61 who were interviewed every two years over a six-year period beginning in 1992 about their health, finances, employment history and work or retirement life.

The researchers said mental health benefits were seen more in people who took on work related to their careers before they retired. This may be because there is more stress with learning a new field, and because retirees who take on a job outside their field may do so because they had to go back to work for financial reasons.

The researchers refer to work after retirement as “bridge employment.”

The study appears in the October issue of the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology.
