Abortion Rates Drop With Increased Contraception Use

New York, NY (AHN) – Increased use of contraception worldwide has led to a significant drop in the number of abortions performed over the past decade, according to U.S. researchers.
In a new report from the Guttmacher Institute, which studies reproductive health issues, researchers reported that the number of abortions declined from 45.5 million procedures in 1995 to 41.6 procedures in 2003.
The trend was seen in both developed and developing nations, with the greatest progress experienced in developed countries.
The researchers said the decline in abortions also coincided with the liberalization of abortion laws. Nineteen countries have reduced restrictions on abortions, while three placed tougher restrictions during the time period.
Yet the researchers said in a statement that 40 percent of the world’s women live in countries with restrictive abortion laws, mostly in Africa and Latin America.
The report, “Abortion Worldwide: A Decade of Uneven Progress” is available at www.guttmacher.org.
