‘Pirates Of The Caribbean 5’ After-Credits Scene: Popular Character Returns, May Signal Johnny Depp’s Exit

There’s an after-credits scene in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales that could offer a major spoiler about the future of the franchise — and the potential departure of the man who made it famous.

The fifth edition of the pirate adventure franchise is hitting theaters this weekend, and those willing to stay all the way until the end will see a hint about the return of a popular character in yet another sequel.

First, as a primer for those not familiar with the concept of the after-credits scene, it is a short scene inserted at the very end of the movie, after all the credits have stopped rolling. These scenes are a reward for moviegoers willing to stay in their seats an extra five to ten minutes through all of the credits, and usually wrap up an unresolved plot line or — in the case of movie franchises — give a glimpse into the next installment.

That appears to be the case with the after-credits scene in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. As Entertainment Weekly reported, the scene revives one of the major characters from the second and third installments of the series.

As the report noted, Davy Jones (Bill Nighy) makes a return after the credits stop rolling.

“In the scene, Will Turner (Orlando Bloom), now freed from the curse that bound him as captain of the Flying Dutchman, is asleep in bed next to Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), after they’ve been happily reunited. But Will’s awoken by something entering their room, and we see a spooky, clawed hand that definitely looks like it belongs Jones.

“As Jones approaches, Will startles awake for real — he was only dreaming! — and settles back into sleep. Except, if he had been dreaming, why are there wet barnacles under his bed?”

This after-credits scene makes it clear that the series is looking at a return for Davy Jones in the sixth installation — and possibly a step back for Johnny Depp. As Bustle pointed out, the focus on Will and Elizabeth at the end could signal that they will take the lead in Pirates 6.

But after-credits scenes in the Pirates of the Caribbean series aren’t always the best predictor of what will happen next, the report added.

“That said, plans teased in post-credits scenes are not always carried out. For example, the post-credits scene of the last Pirates movie, On Stranger Tides, featured Angelica (Penélope Cruz) finding a voodoo doll of Jack, clearly setting her up as a potential villain,” the report pointed out. “Alas, Angelica fails to appear in Dead Men Tell No Tails, so we know that Pirates doesn’t always follow through. For now, however, let’s just take comfort in the idea of a Will Turner vs. Davy Jones sequel. Because that’s one I’d like to see.”

There could potentially be a gigantic audience waiting to see the Pirates of the Caribbean 5 after-credits scene. The movie is predicted to win the box office in its opening weekend, with most predictions falling in the $80-$90 million range in the first weekend in the United States.

While there are not yet any solid plans for a sixth movie in the series, the continued success of the Pirates series means it’s likely that Disney will come back to the well one more time — though there is no sign yet that Johnny Depp could be done with the franchise beyond speculation. And until then, fans of the series will at least have the Pirates of the Caribbean 6 after-credits scene to give them a glimpse of what could be to come.
