CM Punk To Wrestle Again? Recent Tweets Get Hopes Up, But They’re Bogus After All

Is it possible that CM Punk will wrestle again? Earlier this week, reports suggested that the 38-year-old former WWE Champion was offered a cool $1 million to take part in a massive 128-man tournament organized by a British wrestling promotion. And while the man behind that company had seemingly confirmed earlier today that Punk will be taking part in the tournament, there’s one major issue with that tweet — as it turns out, the promoter’s Twitter account was hacked.

Since he walked out of WWE in 2014, CM Punk has seemingly wanted nothing more to do with professional wrestling. Yet each time people chant his name at WWE events, it becomes clear once again that fans want him back in the squared circle, preferably in the WWE, where he first became a household name and one of the company’s top stars of the past decade. But will a million dollars be enough to convince CM Punk to wrestle again?

According to the Sun, that was the amount of money British promotion 5 Star Wrestling offered to the longest-reigning modern-day WWE Champion — the largest sum of money offered to anyone in the company’s history. The Sun quoted 5 Star’s owner, Daniel Hinkles, who confirmed on Friday that he had offered $1 million in U.S. currency to Punk, real name Phil Brooks, in hopes that he would take part in the “world’s first” 128-man wrestling tournament, which is scheduled to kick off at the Echo Arena in Liverpool on June 10.

Hinkles added that 5 Star Wrestling has been trying to contact CM Punk and convince him to wrestle again since 2015, but after repeated attempts to lure him in had failed, he’s now making an unprecedented offer to the WWE wrestler-turned mixed martial arts fighter.

Earlier today, it looked like Daniel Hinkles had finally succeeded in his attempts to sign CM Punk to his company’s 128-man tournament, as he had apparently confirmed his participation in a tweet sent earlier today. But while the tweets can indeed be viewed above, the big catch here is that it isn’t even from Daniel Hinkles.

A report from Wrestling Inc. clarified that the promoter’s Twitter account had, in fact, been hacked, and is currently restricted by the microblogging service due to “unusual activity.” That means 5 Star Wrestling still has a few weeks to get CM Punk to wrestle again, but for the moment, Punk has yet to sign on the dotted line, or even give anything resembling a verbal commitment to compete in 5 Star’s big tournament next month.

While Punk is far from being confirmed after all, 5 Star Wrestling’s 128-man tournament is expected to feature WWE alumni Carlito, John Morrison (a.k.a. Johnny Mundo in Lucha Underground), and Rey Mysterio, among other big names.

On a related note, many fans were likewise excited yesterday at the prospect of CM Punk wrestling again, when a tweet showed what appeared to be the ex-WWE Superstar at the NXT pay-per-view Takeover: Chicago. However, publications such as Sportskeeda were quick to debunk the rumors, as the photo tweeted yesterday was actually a doctored image of Punk, who had yet to make his MMA debut at the time, attending a UFC event. This user tweet compares both images and also confirms that the original post may have been meant to troll wrestling fans and get their hopes up about a potential return to WWE.

So far, the official Twitter account of CM Punk says nothing about wrestling again, as one may expect. Aside from showing support for his hometown Chicago Cubs, he’s also posted some retweets relating to his wife April Mendez-Brooks’ (a.k.a. former WWE Divas Champion AJ Lee) recently-released autobiography Crazy is My Superpower, but nothing about any sort of return to the wrestling ring.
