‘The Walking Dead’: Alternate Negan Kills From Season 7 Released

The Walking Dead may have only let Negan kill two main characters in the first episode of Season 7 but alternate deaths were filmed and they’ve now been released. These alternate Negan kills from the first episode of Season 7 of The Walking Dead are explicit (although not nearly as graphic as the footage shown on TV).

This article contains spoilers from Season 7 of The Walking Dead so you might want to skip it if you haven’t watched the season yet.

In the first episode of Season 7 of The Walking Dead, viewers were on the edge of their seats because they knew that someone was going to die. The producers of The Walking Dead did everything in their power to keep the secret from coming out. They even said at various points that the actors didn’t even know who was going to be killed. Perhaps this is why the alternate footage of the Negan kills from The Walking Dead‘s opening episode of Season 7 were filmed.

The Walking Dead producers may also have filmed these alternate Negan kills as a way to confuse and misdirect the fans, but none of it was used or leaked prior to the airing of the first episode of Season 7.

In this alternate footage, characters that did not see the blunt end of Lucille in the Season 7 opener are seen getting bashed in the head the same way that Glenn and Abraham did. Norman Reedus, Ross Marquand, Josh McDermitt, Chandler Riggs, Christian Serratos, Danai Gurira, and Sonequa Martin-Green all had to take turns experiencing what it was like to get hit in the head with a baseball bat on the first days of production for Season 7 of The Walking Dead. It is completely possible that they did not even know which take was going to end up being aired to viewers.

The footage of these alternate Negan kills did end up airing in the dream sequence that Rick experienced in the first episode of Season 7 of The Walking Dead though. While it was Abraham and Glenn that did get killed, the producers used Rick’s dream to tease viewers before they actually showed the final scenes. The dream only briefly showed the alternate death scenes though while the video shows more detail.

The video of the alternate Negan kills slows everything down. The graphic effects are more visible in this video than they were in Rick’s dream sequence. According to Comic Book, Greg Nicotero, the executive producer said that Lucille, Negan’s weapon of choice, was equipped “with blood bags which would burst upon impact, to truly sell the brutality being showcased in the premiere episode.”

The graphic impact was terrifying to some viewers of The Walking Dead. Many of them thought that The Walking Dead went too far with the scene where Glenn and Abraham were killed by Negan. The scene was definitely more graphic than anything that viewers of The Walking Dead has been exposed to on the show in the past.

Since The Walking Dead was under so much criticism for the Negan kills of the first episode of Season 7 and a later episode where Spencer gets killed and his insides end up on the outside, some believe that they cut back on the gore in other episodes. In the mid-season finale of Season 7 of The Walking Dead, the character known as Fat Joey gets killed by Daryl when he’s beaten to death with a lead pipe. Actor Joshua Hoover told Comic Book the following.

“Yeah I got hit right square in the head. There was the special effects that they do with the blood packet. They had a blood packet on the pipe and it just went everywhere. Everybody said it looked so awesome, but also pretty graphic. So I’m assuming that’s why they didn’t show that angle, they probably had a little too much already with Spencer’s guts.”

What do you think of the footage that shows the alternate Negan kills from The Walking Dead Season 7 opening episode? Was it hard to watch?

Don’t’ forget that Season 8 of The Walking Dead starts in October of 2017, and the first trailer for the season is expect to be released at San Diego Comic-Con in July.
