Pokémon Trainers Can Easily Catch Midnight Form Lycanroc In ‘Pokémon Sun’ And ‘Moon’ For Free With Code

Pokémon trainers hunting down Lycanroc can catch the beast in its Midnight Form for free during a special, limited-time Pokémon distribution event. To catch Lycanroc, players can stop by their local participating GameStop for a unique code that allows the Pokémon to be downloaded into the game without putting anything up for trade. The event runs from May 15 through June 5, or while codes last.

Midnight Form Lycanroc can only be caught in Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon (abbreviated by some fans as Pokémon SM, Pokémon SuMo, and even Pokémon S&M). That means players with older games like Pokémon X, Pokémon Y, Pokémon Omega Ruby, or Pokémon Alpha Sapphire are out of luck this time around.

Catching Lycanroc is almost exactly like getting Genesect or Volcanion in previous distribution events. The first step is to obtain a free Lycanroc code card at a participating GameStop store in the U.S. Even though the Lycanroc event is scheduled to continue through June 5, the code cards are only available while supplies last. If cards run out, you may be able to inquire about getting a code printed on a receipt as has worked on occasion for previous events; however, your results may vary.

With Memorial Day weekend sales potentially bringing in lots of gamers to GameStop stores, and with Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon being two of the best-selling games in the franchise’s history, these cards may fly off store shelves quickly. On the other hand, since Lycanroc is not a legendary or mythical Pokémon and can be obtained through normal gameplay, it’s possible trainers may decide this distribution event is not worth the trip. For the collector who just has to “catch ’em all,” though, heading out to get a Lycanroc code card as soon as possible is recommended.

When you’re ready to redeem your code to catch Midnight Form Lycanroc, follow these steps:

1. From the Main Menu, select the “Mystery Gift” option.

2. Then, select the “Receive Gift” option.

3. Choose the “Get with Code/Password” option. (You’ll need to connect to the Internet at this point.)

4. Enter the unique code exactly as it appears on the card.

5. Get Lycanroc and return to the Main Menu.

6. Visit any Pokémon Center and pick up Lycanroc from the delivery person.

Important Notes:

  • You need to have an empty space in your party before picking up your new Pokémon. It won’t work if your party is full.
  • Once Midnight Form Lycanroc is caught, save your game.
  • Charge up your 3DS or 2DS, or be connected to power using the A/C adapter, while transferring the Pokémon to your game. If you lose power while the transfer is going on, it can potentially corrupt your save file.

Lycanroc is a wolf-like Rock-type Pokémon. It evolves from the puppy Rockruff, and its evolved form is dependent upon the game it evolves from. If you have Pokémon Sun, Rockruff evolves into the Midday Form when leveled up during the day after Level 25. In Pokémon Moon, Rockruff evolves into its Midnight Form when leveled up at night after Level 25.

This specific distribution event makes it easier for Pokémon Sun owners to get the Midnight Form of Lycanroc, but its moveset and held item also make it a good catch for all players. The official Pokémon website explains in further detail.

“Rock your battles with Lycanroc Midnight Form in your Pokémon Sun or Pokémon Moon game with a code from participating GameStop stores. Opponents can’t hide from the Rock-type Pokémon Lycanroc! Its No Guard Ability makes sure hard-hitting moves such as Stone Edge and Fire Fang will never miss. Lycanroc also holds a Life Orb, adding even more bite to each attack!”

Lycanroc transfers over at Level 50 with four offense-focused moves: the Rock-type Stone Edge, Fire-type Fire Fang, Dark-type Sucker Punch, and Attack stat-boosting Swords Dance.

As noted above, since the No Guard Ability ensures the accuracy of the Pokémon’s attacks in battle, it makes boosting attack power with Swords Dance all the more effective. The Life Orb also increases the amount of damage done by each attack, turning Lycanroc into a potential one-hit K.O. machine. The only major drawback is that Life Orb reduces the maximum HP of its holder every turn. Then again, with all that power, this pocket monster isn’t going to be drawing out the battle.
