Ben Roethlisberger Officially Ruled Out Against Ravens

Ben Roethlisberger isn’t rehabilitating from his injuries as quickly as the Pittsburgh Steelers would have hoped, leading the team to officially rule him out for Sunday’s matchup against the Baltimore Ravens.

There were rumors throughout the day on Friday that the Steelers were pessimistic about Roethlisberger’s chances of playing, but a source confirmed to ESPN in the afternoon that the quarterback would be out. The team later included Roethlisberger on the injury list as unable to play in the game.

Ben Roethlisberger suffered an injury to his right shoulder and his ribs, which has caused him pain and affected his ability to create the torque needed to have velocity on his passes, ESPN noted.

The injury is a particular setback given the Steelers opponent this week. The division-leading Baltimore Ravens have feasted on the Steelers with Roethlisberger out of the lineup, going 6-0 against the Steelers since Big Ben was drafted in 2004. When Roethlisberger is in the lineup the Steelers are 9-4 against the Ravens.

Because of the Ben Roethlisberger injury, the Steelers will again have to turn to Charlie Batch, who struggled last week in a loss to the lowly Cleveland Browns. Normal second-string quarterback Byron Leftwich is still out after suffering multiple rib fractures two weeks ago in a 13-10 loss to the Ravens.

The game this week is pivotal to the Steelers playoff hopes. With Indianapolis at 7-4, the Steelers need a win to maintain control over one of the two wild card playoff spots, or at least keep the Steelers in the race until Ben Roethlisberger is healed from his injury.
