Australian Magazine Cuts Women In Half, Asks Men Which Side They Want

Zoo Weekly, an Australian men’s magazine, managed to enrage women and some of its own male readers when it posted attractive women cut in half on its Facebook page. Under each photo the magazine wrote:

“Left or right? But you’ve got to tell us how you came to that decision.”

The post was actually made to the groups Facebook page in October but only this week was it censored by Australia’s ad watchdog, the Advertising Standards Bureau.

The censor complain reads:

“The image, disturbing nature of having a disembodied woman and the offensive, clearly sexist and even abusive nature of some responses on a page being used to advertise this product should not be allowed. Both the pictures, the questions that are posed and the responses are regularly demeaning and unacceptable to women. Women are objectified and sexualised.”

In it’s odd defense Zoo Weekly claims the content in question was not an ad and more importantly “(men’s) choice of Zoo magazine is for a purpose – to engage with content that doesn’t require too much thought.”

While the company may defend its post it has also removed the disturbing content from its Facebook page.

So you decide, was the magazine just having fun or is someone on its editorial board leaning towards full-time serial killer status?

According to publisher ACP Magazines:

“ZOO sells 280,000 magazines a month, reaching 1.45 million Aussie men – who turn to ZOO every Monday for laughs, girls, and a guide to this week’s best games, music, movies, gadgets, cars and more. That’s more than three times as many mags sold and readers engaged compared with other men’s mags. ZOO reaches readers from their teens all the way to their forties, because we know men better than anyone else.”

I would love to hear what other guys think, does Zoo Weekly know us best or are they creeping you out a little bit too?
