Afghanistan: Teen Girl Beheaded For Turning Down Marriage Proposal

An Afghanistan teenage girl was reportedly beheaded by her own cousin after her family turned down his marriage proposal. Gisa is believed to be about 15 years old. According to reports by local police officers, she was decapitated with a knife in the Imam Sahib District of Kunduz on Tuesday.

Massoud and Sadeq, both male, were reportedly arrested in connection with Gisa’s beheading, Radar Online notes. The men arrested are believed to be relatives of the Afghanistan teenager and live in the same village.

Gisa’s father stated during an interview with a local news agency that he decided against granting the marriage request because he felt his daughter was too young. The teenager was attacked when she was returning home from the nearby Kulkul village where she was getting water from a well.

The Blaze reports that a local police official had this to say about the beheading:

“People were harassing the family and asking for her hand. When she refused, they did this to her. Our investigation shows those who killed her were people who wanted to marry her.”

Violent attacks on women in the Kunduz region of Afghanistan have reportedly occurred multiple times in 2012. In July a father reportedly murdered his two daughters after they ran away with a man. During the same month an Afghan woman, 22, was shot in front of a crowd of onlookers. Another woman, known as Najiba, was reportedly executed by a member of a militant group after claims surfaced that she had engaged in an affair with a group commander.
