‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’ Porn Rip-Off Sued By Universal

Universal studios has filed a lawsuit against the makers of a porn rip-off of E.L. James’ erotic novel Fifty Shades of Grey, accord to Deadline.

Smash Pictures reportedly released Fifty Shades Of Grey: A XXX Adaptation this fall. Since executives feel the film is nothing more than a blatant attempt to cash in on the popularity of James’ book, the studio is hoping a judge will force them to yank the flick from retail shelves.

“The first XXX adaptation is not a parody, and it does not comment on, criticize, or ridicule the originals. It is a rip-off, plain and simple,” the lawsuit explains, adding that the film in question uses “exact dialogue, characters, events, story and style from the Fifty Shades trilogy.”

According to E! Online, Universal and producers of the real Fifty Shades of Grey adaptation managed to get their hands on a copy of the film. After a thorough investigation of the feature, executives determined the movie isn’t just a harmless porn parody.

The a section of the suit reads as follows:

“Beginning with the first ‘XXX Adaptation’s’ opening scene and continuing throughout the next two and a half hours of the film, Smash Pictures copies without reservation from the unique expressive elements of the ‘Fifty Shades’ trilogy, progressing through the events of ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ and into the second book, ‘Fifty Shades Darker.’ “

Since studio executives feel the movie is nothing more than a cheap rip-off, they’re asking for physical and digital copies to be completely destroyed. The Hollywood Reporter explains that Universal is looking to have any Fifty Shades Of Grey: A XXX Adaptation tie-in merchandise squashed as well.

“The marketing efforts surrounding the Infringing Works attempt to trade on the popularity and goodwill associated with the ‘Fifty Shades Trilogy’ and attempt to divert potential customers away from the ‘Fifty Shades Trilogy’ through the use of the Fifty Shades Trademarks in the titles of the Infringing Works and in associated promotional materials,” the lawsuit states.
