Cadel Evans’ backyard the focus for 2009 Herald-Sun Tour
The Australian cycling scene, long forced to watch their riders battle overseas for patchy results, will get their annual dose of local action starting tomorrow with the Jayco Herald-Sun Tour running through the hunting grounds of newly-crowned road cycling world champion Cadel Evans.
The Herald-Sun Tour through regional Victoria, which vies with the Tour Down Under in Adelaide as the premier cycling event in Australia, will start in in the historic goldfields of Ballarat, snake its way around the spectacular Great Ocean Road, visit Evans’ home town of Barwon Heads, and finish as usual in the Little Italy section of Carlton’s Lygon Street.
The major team in contention this year is Garmin-Slipstream, led by a suitably Australian contender for the overall classification in Bradley Wiggins. The team will chase all major honours in the race in the absence of last year’s dominant Team Saxo Bank, with climbers Trent Lowe and Tom Peterson, plus sprinter Chris Sutton and Canadian time trial specialist Svein Tuft.
Other teams vying for coloured jerseys will include: the Jayco Australian National Team; American squads Bissell, Rock Racing and Jelly Belly; plus an English representation from the British Professional Continental team.
