Petrova Wins At China Open, Tsonga Edges Gulbis In Japan

Beijing, China (AHN) – Russia’s Nadia Petrova defeated China’s Peng Shuai at the China Open 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-2 in the quarterfinals Friday.
Peng started the match breaking Petrova’s serve during the first set.
But the 13th seed, answered by breaking the 2-0 tie in the fourth game. Pend took back the lead at 7-5 in the 10th round.
Petrova pulled within one set in the seventh and ninth game, and solidified her win during the last frame, 6-2. Petrova will face Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova, who defeated Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
In an earlier match, Croatia’s Marin Cilic will move to the semifinals after a win over Russia’s Nikolay Davydenko 6-4, 6-4.
Novak Djokovic reached the last four after defeating fifth seed Fernando Verdasco 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.
At the Japan Open, France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga defeated qualifier Ernests Gulbis of Latvia 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals Friday.
Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny defeated Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic 6-2, 7-6 (8-6).
Youzhny will face Australia’s Lleyton Hewitt in the semifinals. Hewitt, seeded eighth, defeated French qualifier Edouard Roger-Vasselin’s with a 6-4, 6-0 win.
