Study Cites Strong Link Between Obesity And Depression

Australian and British health researchers say there is a close link between depression and obesity.

The researchers, from the University of Adelaide, said in an editorial in the British Medical Journal, that a better understanding of the link is needed for more effective treatment and prevention of mental illness.

They said that overweight people, and people who perceive themselves as being obese, often experience weight-related stigmas and discrimination, which can lead to low self esteem, low self worth and guilt.

Obesity is also associated with socioeconomic disadvantages and low levels of physical activity, which are both predictors of depression, the researchers wrote.

The researchers were commenting on a study found in the same issue of the British Medical Journal by British scientists from the University College London.
