Scientists Closer To Developing Cancer Vaccine Using Stem Cells

Miami, FL (AHN) – U.S. and Chinese scientists say there is a potential to develop a colon cancer vaccine by manipulating stem cells to “fool” the immune system.

The study was a collaboration between Chinese scientists and researchers with the University of Connecticut Stem Cell Institute. They said in a statement that the research was the first of its kind to reveal the potential role of human stem cells in vaccinating against the disease.

The scientists said they vaccinated laboratory mice with human embryonic stem cells and discovered a consistent immune response against colon cancer cells. They said they saw a dramatic decline in tumor growth in the immunized mice.

The study is published in the journal Stem Cells.
