Djokovic, Davydenko Triumph, Sharapova Ousted In China, Tsonga Wins Tokyo Opener

Beijing, China (AHN) – Novak Djokovic and Nikolay Davydenko posted easy wins and rolled into the third stage, while women’s former world No. 1 Maria Sharapova lost her third-round assignment Wednesday in the China Open.

Djokovic, seeded second, destroyed Viktor Troicki in an all-Serbian match 6-3, 6-0 in the second round at the Olympic tennis venue in Beijing.

Fourth-seeded Davydenko continued to sizzle and posted a 6-1, 6-0 thumping of German Philipp Kohlschreiber on Day 3.

Davydenko, coming off a hardcourt title in Malaysia, will next face eighth-seeded Marin Cilic of Croatia, who prevailed over Frenchman Julien Benneteau 6-2, 2-6, 6-0 Wednesday.

Spain’s Fernando Verdasco (No. 5 seed) also barged into the next stage after defeating former world No. 1 and compatriot Juan Carlos Ferrero 7-5, 6-4.

In women’s third-round play, former top-ranked Maria Sharapova of Russia registered 21 unforced errors en route to an 6-2, 6-4 upset by China’s Peng Shuai.

In the match, Shuai registered three unforced errors.

Fourth seed Elena Dementieva, who won the Olympic gold medal here last year, advanced into the quarters after plastering local bet Li Na 6-2, 6-0.

Other advancers at the $4.5 million China Open were No. 6 seed Svetlana Kuznetsova and rising Russian teen Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

At the Japan Open, second-seeded Frenchman Jo-Wilfred Tsonga booked a second round spot after demolishing German Mischa Zverev 6-4, 6-3 Wednesday.

In the next stage, Tsonga will face countryman and Davis Cup teammate Richard Gasquet, who handled Philipp Petzschner of Germany 6-3, 6-2.

Also Wednesday, fourth-seeded Gael Monfils and No. 7 seed Stanislas Wawrinka registered second-round victories at the $1.226 million tennis event.
