Ottawa, Canada – Justin Bieber wore overalls when he met up with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper on November 24.

Justin Bieber’s overalls made an appearance in Ottawa as the pop star collected a Diamond Jubilee award from Harper, who was dressed in a smart suit and tie. Bieber’s casual look was completed by a baseball cap (worn backwards, obviously).

The 18-year-old star later tweeted a photo of himself and the PM giving a cringeworthy “thumbs up” pose in their mismatched outfits. He added the caption:

“I met the Prime Minister in overalls lol.”

The photograph has now gone viral, with the response on Twitter being split: while many defend Justin Bieber’s overalls stunt, plenty of bores accuse the pop poppet of being disrespectful.

The medal collected by Bieber on Saturday will be given to a further 60,000 Canadians this year. The Diamond Jubilee award is handed out to Canadians who make a “significant contribution to a particular province, territory, region or community within Canada, or an achievement that brings credit to Canada.” Feel free to debate whether Bieber fits that description.

While plenty of people are sanctimoniously lecturing Bieber on Twitter for his flagrant disregard of formal clothes, the star did have one notable defender: Prime Minister Stephen Harper himself. You’d think his opinion in this matters, right?

Taking to his official Twitter account, Harper wrote:
