Toyota Prius: The Least Likely Car To Get Stolen
A Toyota Prius is the perfect car for a person who doesn’t want to worry about gas prices or car theft.
According to a new report from the National Insurance Crime Bureau, the Toyota Prius is the least likely car to get stolen.
The NICB reports that only one in 606 Prius cars (the 2008-2010 model) get stolen. The average for all cars made between 2008-2010 is one in 78. Between September 4, 2000 and June 30, 2012, only 2,439 Toyota Priuses were reported stolen.
But the Toyota Prius may not hold its spot as the least likely car to get stolen for long. According to the NCIB, the number of Prius thefts has increased every year, with the exception of 2009, as the car gets more popular.
“There has been a general increase each year in the number of Prius thefts, with the exception of 2009, which had a drop from the year before. It also appears that 2012 is also on track to have fewer Prius thefts than occurred in 2011.”
Slashgear reports that one of the main reasons that the Toyota Prius doesn’t get stolen often is because thieves have little use for its one-of-a-kind hybrid engine since it can only work with other Priuses.
The NCIB reports that most Prius thefts occurred in California where the car is very popular. More than one thousand Toyota Priuses were stolen in California (1,062). Another 127 were stolen in Florida, 111 were taken in New York, and 92 were stolen in Washington.
