‘PlanetSide 2’ Is Here: Sony’s Exciting First Person Shooter Launches to Packed Servers

Fans of First Person Shooters and massive interplanetary warfare are rejoicing over today’s launch of Sony Online Entertainment’s spectacular new Free To Play MMOFPS (Massively Multiplayer Online First Person Shooter), PlanetSide 2. The long awaited sequel to the original Planetside FPS is up and running and the servers are packed with excited gamers, anxious to jump into gigantic PVP battles with thousands of other players.

As the minutes ticked down toward the official launch, SOE announced a greatly appreciated last minute patch to substantially reduce the grinding in PlanetSide 2. An official forum post explained the welcome changes:

“You’ll be earning cert points twice as fast as the current build. We’ll be adjusting many of the cert prices to compensate for this increase, most certs for things like class abilities, attachments, etc. will be doubling to maintain the same overall time investment as current, but weapon certs will be increasing by a smaller amount or in some cases staying the same, effectively reducing the total time investment for unlocking items.”

“As you can see, these prices combined with doubling the cert gain rate effectively cuts the total time investment for the top end weapons down by 30+% for all players.”

PlanetSide 2 recently completed a successful beta run and the word was out well in advance of launch day that this is one FPS you don’t want to miss. The graphics are stunning, the combat is awesome and the action is non-stop and frantic. The game offers PVP lovers the ultimate dose of face to face combat; solo, in small squads, in full platoons or as raging, all out battles engulfing entire continents.

The game takes place on the ground and in the air of Auraxis. Players choose one of three factions to join; The Terran Republic, The New Conglomerate or The Vanu Sovereignty. After choosing your side, you join the struggle for the planet’s priceless resources and powerful ancient technology. The game features territory control in an open-world and large battles featuring up to 2000 players per continent, on foot or in land/air vehicles.

SOE described the action on the PlanetSide 2 website:

“Battles take place not between dozens of troops, but thousands; with air and ground vehicles slugging it out alongside squads of troops. Whether in open fields, tightly packed urban centers or enormous structures, planning, teamwork and communication are essential.”

“PlanetSide 2 features incredible continent maps with dozens of square kilometers of seamless gameplay space; every inch of which is hand-crafted, contestable space. With the territorial control meta-game, landmass has intrinsic value.”

“In PlanetSide 2 battles can last for days or even weeks, and finally taking control of the base means it’s yours until someone can take it back. Working strategically as a team to capture key tactical positions such as power plants and ammo depots have long-lasting effects that can shift the tide of battle. Victory requires strategic teamwork and a quick trigger finger to survive the massive battles.”

In order to help gamers handle the frantic pace of combat, Sony added dynamic features to assist the player community. While you slug it out in PlanetSide 2, you will be able to locate page after page of constantly updated battle information on the all important Player website:

“PlanetSide 2 provides sophisticated communication tools that players need to coordinate and strategize from within and outside the game environments. From our up-to-the-minute, data driven Players site, providing the most relevant stats, map dominance information and more.”

PlanetSide 2 offers gamers some of the most spectacular and massive battles ever seen in online gaming. If over the top, all out warfare with a vast array of high tech weaponry and futuristic space vehicles is your cup of tea, then you need to play PlanetSide 2.
