Report Predicts ‘Doping’ Tests In Exam Takers’ Future

Miami, FL (AHN) – As more students take drugs to help them perform better on academic tests, researchers in Australia said exam students could face routine doping tests similar to Olympic athletes in the future.

The drugs, referred to in the study as “nootropics,” were designed to treat cognitive disorders like dementia and attention deficit hyperactive disorder. They include drugs sold under the names Ritalin, Provigil and Dexedrine.

The researchers, from the University of Sydney, say the non-medical use of methylphendidate and amphetamine drugs like these is as high as 25 percent on some campuses in the United States. Students are also taking drugs like brahmi, piraceam (sold as Nootropil), donepezil (sold as Aricept) and galantamine (sole as Reminyl) to boost memory retention.

Lead researcher Vince Clark, with the university’s psychology department, said in a statement that exam students may someday be subjected to urine tests.

The report appears in the British Medical Journal.
