US Senators Reject Ban on Insurers Covering Abortion

Washington, D.C. (AHN) – A Senate committee rejected Wednesday two amendments to the health care reform bill proposed by Utah Republican Senator Orrin G. Hatch to prevent the use of tax money in funding abortion.

The proposed amendment barring insurers from covering abortion was rejected by the Senate Finance Committee by a vote of 10-13. Democrats described Hatch’s proposal as discriminatory and that the Senate and House versions of the health care reform bill already prohibits the use of federal money for abortion.

Committee Chairman Sen. Max Baucus (D-Montana) assured that no federal tax money will fund abortion and said the bill is not an abortion bill.

Hatch vowed to continue his fight for amendments to the bill.
