Drunk Driver’s Mom Thrown In Jail For Laughing At Victim’s Family

A judge in Detroit, Michigan threw the mother of a drunk driver in jail after she allegedly laughed at the victim’s family, the New York Post reports.

Amanda Kosal, 25, made a court appearance on Thursday, waiting to hear her sentence for killing a 35-year-old father of five – Jerome Zirker – in a drunk driving accident.

While the victim’s sister was reading a statement on behalf of his children, she was interrupted by laughter and talking in the courtroom.

It was reported that Donna Kosal and her unidentified boyfriend began laughing at the victim’s family.

“It’s time for him to go,” said judge Qiana Lillard as she gazed in the gallery. “Whoever can sit here at a tragic moment like this and laugh and smile when somebody has lost a family member, I mean the entire time that Mr. Zirker’s sister was speaking, that clown, and that’s what I am going to call him, a clown, was sitting there smiling and laughing.”

The judge threw the pair out of the courtroom for laughing. Lillard stated that “instead of just exiting court quietly, she got up, stormed out, violently burst through the door and began yelling in the hallway, further disrupting proceedings.”

“These are very serious matters. I understand that you all are very upset because your loved one is going to prison, but guess what, she’s going to prison for the choices that she made. These people are here grieving, saddened because a senseless act took away their loved one and you’re sitting here acting like it’s a joke?”

After spending a night in jail, Kosal appeared in court the following day visibly upset and apologetic for her actions.

“I deeply apologize for what I did. I was under a lot of stress,” she told the judge.

“What you have to understand is as hard as this is for you to see your baby going to prison, imagine what that family feels like when their child is dead. I hope that you learned a valuable lesson from this,” said Lillian.

The judge went on to say that Donna’s laughing in court was “disruptive and disrespectful behavior disrupted today’s proceedings and you, ma’am, are going to the Wayne County Jail for 93 days.”

“These people are here grieving, saddened because a senseless act took away their loved one and you’re sitting here acting like it’s a joke? Not in courtroom 502. Not today, and not any other day.”

The drunk driver was eventually sentenced to three to 15 years in prison for the deadly DUI crash that occurred on June 23, 2015.

It was reported that when Amanda’s vehicle crossed the center line of Beech Daly Road near Plymouth Road, she struck an SUV head-on.

Zirker was killed in the crash and his 31-year-old fiancé Brittany Johnson survived, but she was seriously injured.

Johnson stated that Zirker had just picked her up from her job after working a 12-hour shift. Usually, their children would ride along but on that day, “they were luckily at their grandma’s house or it would have been all of us.”

“Amanda took everything away from me and it’s horrible,” Johnson said. “She took a good man off this earth. He was a good man who took care of his kids on a daily basis.”

The victim’s mother, Rathel Fizer, stated that she didn’t want Amanda to go to jail. She said, “I want her to stay out and help support my grandchildren because they don’t have a father to take care of them.”

“If she goes to prison or jail, I’m taking care of her. I don’t want her to mail a check. I want her to hand-deliver it to them so she can see the faces that she destroyed.”
