Retired NFL Players Less Likely To Develop Heart Risks

Miami, FL (AHN) – Even though they are typically much larger than the average man, retired NFL players do not have the same risk factors for heart disease, according to a new study.
In fact, compared to other men, retired football players have a “significantly lower prevalence” of diabetes, high blood pressure, sedentary lifestyles and metabolic syndrome, the researchers from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center said in a statement.
The findings are significant since applying body mass index standards to these men would place them in obese or overweight categories. The researchers say their findings are a testament that people of any size should strive to remain fit to reduce health risks.
The researchers compared 150 retired football players with 150 men of similar size who never played professional football. The football players did have some of the same health risks as the other men, like coronary atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries, and many had pre-diabetes conditions.
The study appears in the September issue of the American Journal of Cardiology
