Ready to wake up with a fresh cup of Cracker Jacks? PepsiCo’s Frito-Lay is getting ready to release a new caffeinated product called Cracker Jack’d Power Bites.
According to the Huffington Post, a serving of Cracker Jack’d Power Bites will contain the same amount of caffeine as a cup of coffee. Frito-Lay hasn’t announce an official release date but distributor distributor Nationwide Candy is already taking pre-orders. According to Nationwide Candy, Cracker Jack’d Power Bites will be available by the end of the year.
Caffeinated products have faced tough scrutiny this year. Monster Energy Drinks was blamed for several deaths in a lawsuit earlier this year and a new report by the FDA confirmed that 5-Hour Energy was responsible for more than a dozen deaths over the last four years.
Cracker Jack’d hasn’t hit the market yet but it is already being criticized by several groups.
Michael F. Jacobson, the executive director of The Center for Science in the Public Interest, said:
“Unless the FDA begins enforcing its regulations, I fear that we’ll see caffeine being added to ever-more improbable drinks and snacks, putting children, unsuspecting pregnant women, and others at risk. How soon before we have caffeinated burgers, burritos, or breakfast cereals?”
Cracker Jack’d is also being criticized since traditional Cracker Jacks are clearly marketed to children. It’s unclear if Cracker Jack’d will include little toys but the product will feature the same mascot, Sailor Jack and his dog Bingo, on the packaging.
What do you think about Cracker Jack’d? Is caffeine getting put into too many products?
