High Heel Wearers Pay The Price Later

Boston, MA (AHN) – Women who choose to wear high heels and other shoes for looks purposes only may pay the price for it later in life with foot pain, according to a recent study.

The researchers, with the Boston University School of Public Health and the Institute for Aging Research at Hebrew SeniorLife, said that men do not experience the same foot pain as women because they make better choices in footwear.

Out of 3,372 participants in the study, 25 percent reported generalized foot pain, with almost 30 percent of women saying they had foot pain, compared with 19 percent of the men. And the foot pain in women is much more likely to be because of the types of shoes they wore when they were younger, the researchers said in a statement. The study revealed that less than 2 percent of the male participants wore what the researchers term “poor shoes.”

The study appears in the October issue of Arthritis Care & Research.
