In Final Address, Ron Paul Declares ‘Our Constitution Has Failed’

Ron Paul says Constitution has failed in farewell address

In a 52-minute address that will likely be his last in Congress, Texas Representative Ron Paul has declared America’s Constitution a failure.

“Our Constitution, which was intended to limit government power and abuse, has failed,” the Republican representative said. “The Founders warned that a free society depends on a virtuous and moral people. The current crisis reflects that their concerns were justified.”

ABC News reports that for Libertarian-leaning Ron Paul, the “current crisis” includes the recession as well as government breaches in authority and restrictions on individual liberty. Paul, 77, is retiring from Congress at the end of the current term after severing several stints, adding up to 23 years, in the House of Representatives. He has been in Congress consecutively since 1997.

“This may well be the last time I speak on the House Floor, Paul began. “At the end of the year I’ll leave Congress after 23 years in office over a 36 year period. My goals in 1976 were the same as they are today: promote peace and prosperity by a strict adherence to the principles of individual liberty.”

According to The Blaze, Paul’s remarks seemed to acknowledge that he fell short of success in those goals.

“In spite of my efforts, the government has grown exponentially, taxes remain excessive, and the prolific increase of incomprehensible regulations continues,” Paul said. “Wars are constant and pursued without congressional declaration, deficits rise to the sky, poverty is rampant and dependency on the federal government is now worse than any time in our history.”

One of the things Paul laments in his farewell address to Congress is the lack of morality and the decline of religion among Americans. This, he claims, is part of why our Constitution has failed.

“The Founders were convinced that a free society could not exist without a moral people,” Representative Ron Paul said.” Just writing rules won’t work if the people choose to ignore them. Today the rule of law written in the Constitution has little meaning for most Americans, especially those who work in Washington DC. Benjamin Franklin claimed “only a virtuous people are capable of freedom.” John Adams concurred: “Our Constitution was made for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”

Paul, who’s son Rand Paul currently serves as a US Senator from Kentucky, has inspired a generation of voters and politicians but still has failed to generate mainstream support in three presidential bids. With his time in Congress winding down, Paul seemed resigned to the fact that neither side of the aisle had heard his message. Just as he had throughout his career, however, Paul delivered in nonetheless.

“I have come to one firm conviction after these many years of trying to figure out ‘the plain truth of things.’ The best chance for achieving peace and prosperity, for the maximum number of people worldwide, is to pursue the cause of LIBERTY. If you find this to be a worthwhile message, spread it throughout the land.”

What are your thoughts on Ron Paul’s farewell address? Has our Constitution failed?

The constitution has failed due to exactly what Ron said about the growth of the government. Mary Ron didn't want Mitt elected b/c as he and his son Rand have said, Obama and Romney are part of the same party; there are no longer any core differences

  2. Merry Ragni

The people of this once great nation have failed to hold our elected officials responsible to adhere to the principles of our Constitution.

  3. Harley Alderson

the constitution didn't fail we failed to uphold the constitution big difference.

Mary Minott, you are obviously uninformed. Ron Paul refused to endorse Romney and thereby encourage his supporters to vote for him. I won't ask you to look it up because all you had to do was pay attention to the process this country just went through to know this. Thanks for being the perfect example of the Obama voter.

Ron Paul never supported Romney. He ran on the Republican ticket because he felt it was his best shot at securing the (R) nomination. But he didn't have the money that Romney does and lacked the public actually listening to him.

Mary, your comment shows that Paul is right on target! The constitution has failed – and people like you, who believe as you do, are a prime example of this. Paul didn't want Romney. And he's not angry, he's disgusted, as are a lot of us. At this point, it barely matters who the president is. We are so divided by party/political affiliations, that we fail, as a nation, to address the core problems. Don't expect those in Washington to address these issues, because they won't. It isn't in their best interests, because it would give power to the states, which big Washington doesn't want. And don't expect voters to address these issues, because they are too busy bickering amongst themselves. The nation will fall, due to the takers, who outnumber the producers for the first time in our history, and the rest of us have 3 choices; become a taker so we don't have to give to the takers, ignore the obvious and let the chips and the country fall where they may, or run for office and make a difference.

My greatest fears are being realized. We are in serious trouble. The new world order is at the door and Obama is letting them in and giving them a seat at the head of the American table. No more conspiracy. It's in the open. Goodbye Uncle Sam, hello Socialist Dictator.

The Constitution has not failed – we as a People have failed to uphold it. There are too many people willing to stick their heads in the sand in hopes that all the "bad things" will just go away. Those same people do not take the time to educate themselves on the issues, instead preferring to have their news "spoon-fed" to them (even if the information is inaccurate or biased). Nothing will change until We The People decide that each of us has an individual and collective responsibility to support the Constitution and hold those we elect to office to the rules of engagement. You would never give your checkbook to someone that you don't know or hire someone without expecting them to fulfill the terms of their contract with you. However, every day that we turn a blind eye to what happens in the "hallowed halls" of Congress right on down to your local Town Hall, we are doing just that. People that we elect are OUR employees – we need to demand more from them and also demand that we get what we are paying for.

Truth is, we may as well not complain about it. What's done is done. All webcam do is sit back and watch the demise. It's not our fault man, we tried. But there is no point sending a message that fall upon deaf ears. Enjoy what we have left brother, don't let this consume you! It's too late now!

I wonder why most people vote Republican or Democrat? If the better person is non-partisan, then why don't people vote non-partisan?

  11. Eric Kenyon

I want to say that we as americans have ignored and been plain out lazy so now what we gona due bit** or wake up and act.

  12. Shawn Orr

I think we will all soon find that this experiment of a consitutional, democratic republic is coming to a close. At 46, this truth may not fully be realized in my lifetime. But surely within another generation or two. It's a shame that God given liberty and financial independence was something we simply could not respect or appreciate enough to live under.

  13. Shawn Orr

To anyone who still thinks in political terms. Libertarianism is more a way of looking at the world. About a belief in being born with free will, and understanding that no government therfore can offer it to you. It's already yours. It's working hard, and keeping what you earn. It's about doing no harm, and expecting no harm to come to you. Its about an opened and transparent society, and opened and transparent markets. I could go on. But you get the message. Accepting the message is something else. Maybe someday people will get tired of doing the same thing and choose true liberty.

  14. Lonnie R. Krodel

The constitution never failed. The people we sent to the Government did. The people think more about there self's then the Country. If you want a Free Country you better wake up because we are loosing the USA. God Help Us. Mr Paul I'm Sorry I never had a chance to meet you. Wish you the best.

This is THE PROBLEM.THE WEALTHIEST PEOPLE HAVE AN ARMY OF LOBBYIST AT THEIR DISPOSAL TO BUY GOVT OFFICIALS IN ORDER TO ENACT THE LAWS THEY WANT,AND TO GET RID OF THE LAWS THEY DISLIKE.THE WEALTHY FAR LEFT LIBERALS AND WEALTHY NEO CONSERVATIVES HAVE USED THEIR WEALTH TO TAKE AWAY THE VOICE OF EVERYDAY AMERICANS. BEFORE OUR CONGRESSMEN AND SENATORS VOTE ON ANY BILLS TODAY THEY FIRST HAVE TO CHECK WITH THESE PEOPLE.IT IS UNBELIEVABLE THAT THE MAJORITY OF AMERICA HAS NOT YET GATHERED TOGETHER TO MAKE LOBBYING ILLEGAL.THEIR ARE ABOUT 3-4 DOZEN VERY WEALTHY PEOPLE WHO REALLY RUN AMERICA AND UNTIL WE MAKE LOBBYING AND SUPER PAC ELECTION DONORS ON BOTH SIDES A THING OF THE PAST WE WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO SAY THIS IS STILL AMERICA BY THE PEOPLE FOR THE PEOPLE ONE NATION UNDER GOD.NOT A NATION FOR THE RICHEST PEOPLE WHO HAVE ALL THE LOBBYIST.

  16. Mike Mccollum

SOMETHING HAPPENS AT SOME POINT TO THE MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE AND SENATE.THEY START OUT WITH GOOD INTENTIONS PROBABLY WITH THE IDEA OF HELPING AMERICANS FROM THEIR DISTRICTS.THEN AT SOME POINT THEY ARE APPROACHED BY A LOBBYIST WHO WORKS FOR A SHELDON ADELSON OR KOCH BROTHERS ON THE RIGHT,OR JEFF KATZENBERG OR BILL MAHER ON THE LEFT,AND THEY SAY OPEN YOUR EYES.OUR GUYS WANT A LAW PASSED OR WANT A LAW THROWN OUT,AND YOUR GONNA WANT A GREAT JOB AFTER POLITICS.SO THEY REALIZE THAT THEY HAD THE RIGHT IDEA AS FAR AS WHAT JOB TO HAVE,JUST THE WRONG IDEA WHY TO HAVE THAT JOB.THEY ORIGINALLY WANTED TO HELP PEOPLE,BUT NOW REALIZE THAT THEIR ARE SEVERAL VERY WEALTHY LIBERALS AND CONSERVATIVES WHO USE VAST SUMS OF MONEY TO GET WHAT THEY WANT & ITS THESE PEOPLE THEY REALIZE THEY SHOULD BE WORKING FOR.THEY REALIZE THAT AFTER THEIR POLITICAL CAREER IS OVER THEY ARE GONNA NEED A JOB,AND THEY KNOW IT WILL BE QUITE EASY AFTER THEY DO WHAT THEIR NEW EMPLOYERS WANTED.SOME PEOPLE GO INTO POLITICS ALREADY KNOWING THIS AND HAVE NO NEED OR WANT TO HELP ANYBODY BUT INSTEAD USE POLITICS AS A WAY TO MEET THE POWERFUL PEOPLE THEY NEED TO MEET TO GET THEIR DREAMJOB.THIS IS HOW WE LOST AMERICA.CONRESS AND SENATE DO NOTHING FOR US ANYMORE.THEY DONT BUDGE UNLESS THESE SUPER RICH SAY SO.WE NEED A REVOLUTION TO STOP THIS SHIT

I think we have forgotten one important element – as a Nation we need a foundation, ours is gone, there is not much left to build on…. The Nation is undergoing some radical changes economically, ethnically and emotionally and as a whole mentally….. The next few years are going to very tough for a lot of people, its how we as "the people" of this country handle these changes that will reflect the future of our nation…. Handouts, all equal, free healthcare and his entire list of "I'ma gunna's" in my opinion are not going to get it done, neither was the Romney plan… A content middle ground needs to be found, stronger work ethics, pride in ourselves, pride in our children, parenting, a sense of self worth and at home is where the real changes for a better city, state, country and nation will start…. this is the foundation our Nation was built on…

So this is Ron's Legacy. He failed? Nice. There is good in the bad. And bad in the good. I've never been 100% right or wrong.. No one has. But most certainly, he did not fail, nor has our constitution. And soon, he will be feeding from the same trough forever, as those that he condemns. What has failed and what is failing are the successors of what is handed to us by unartfully articulating the message he promotes. Whether elected officials sworn to uphold the constitution do or don't does not relieve each of us of doing all and everything we CAN to faithfully execute this solemn duty. We are the "loyal" opposition. Now, let us by the strength of a power greater than we can imagine, continue to do our part to faithfully execute, however difficult and painstaking, our duties we are all aware of. Our job is to educate and inform each other who is doing the bidding of The Ruling Class, Enemies of the State, and to call them out with certainty.

  19. Keith Davidson

Our Constitution failed because of the Republican party and those in congress and the senate who go on vacation on our dime and not out of there own pocket.

  20. Linda Putz

No, the constitution has not failed . The people have failed to follow it . There are so many corrupt men elected now . They only care about themselves not this country.

  21. Charlie Veazey

I wish Dr. Paul good luck in the future. I wish I had paid attention earlier in his career and really listened to him. Instead I allowed the information cespool of NBC, ABC, CBS, and CNN to be my beacon of reason. The Constitution has failed because WE have allowed it too. When someone writes in a book that The Constitution is a limiting document, we should have seen the light. When backroom deals are brokered between the Democrats and Republicans to shut out other parties from debates there is a problem. America was founded on the hopes for individual freedom. We appear to have become what our forefathers walked away from in England. More and more I feel that we are on our way to becoming Cuba.

  22. Casio Dan

obama gives away free shit and fried chicken and purple drank and whatever else they'll sell their vote for to blacks and latinos, that's why he'll stay in office for another 20 years. kiss the constitution goodbye. demographics have changed. you allow 3rd world filth into this country it becomes a 3rd world country.

  23. Paula Qualls Gurley

Lee Hall………because the two major parties band together to keep outsiders out. Just like saying voting for a third party candidate was a vote for someone else. Ross Perot, Ron Paul, Gary Johnson, Ralph Nader have all bee attacked for "diverting" votes because they dared run.

  24. Amelia Sivadon

Andy – Seriously – Look up Ron Paul Jedi and you will find several pictures of him as a Jedi. :) I didn't make it up. Lee Hall – I will always vote for the candidate that I think is the best fit, and not because it is the popular route. This year, I voted Gary Johnson because I felt he was the best candidate going for what I believed in. Unfortunately, voters have a tendency to vote for whoever has the most money to campaign. Not all candidates could top the $900 million that was spent on this campaign lol.

  25. Mason Merritt

Your so stupid you ignorant woman if you think for one second that obama gives a rats ass about you and your poor fmily your wrong. He
wants SHEEP just like you to control and command, to forever suck of the government teat. Thats not what this country was founded on people create their own paths and futures in this country through hard work determination through faith hope and most importatly love for thy country and fellow brothers and sisters around you not by waiting at the mailbox for checks or food stamps go work save take a walk to work or live within your means save money and put it to use i am a 25 yr old man ex navy verteran and i now have net worth over 250000 dollarsbecause i work hard and put my money to work not buying in excess and not giving a shit about everything new that comes out buying clothes that are affordable and still even find the way to not only give to charities for the needy but to also tithe to the LordGod above because it is all his anyways nothing that i do is myself but only through the Lord and his blessings show themselves around me daily wake up you silly little woman fend for yourself quit complaining you dont have money when you waste the excess that you have or maybe dont have cause you dont live within or under your means o

  26. Paula Qualls Gurley

The Republican party and Congress? You don't include the President, and of Michele Obama in that accusation?

  27. David Schuman

There is no question the constitution has failed, because collectivists and statists have interpreted it to mean whatever warfare and welfare policy it deemed moral, or within the evil empires power. Virtually all rights have been shredded, the federal reserve has the American dollar on the ropes. Drones kill without due process around the world unchecked even by international law. From Lincolns war of oppression against the south that wanted to secede, to Wilson's income tax and central bank, to FDR's new deal, to LBJ's great society, Nixon closing the gold window, Bush's torture, 4th amendment destruction, Obama's continuation of the Bush policies plus adding his own assassination program and the evil individual mandate. The collectivism that has been embraced has the states unfinished liabilities estimated at over 100 Trillion dollars. The warfare/welfare state is collapsing, and good riddance, it's time to return to what the founders intended, a free society. It's sad no one listened to men of principle like Ron before the whole thing collapses which won't be long.
