A recent study suggests that fast food breakfast sandwiches could be harmful to your heart, according to Health on TODAY.
Researchers in Canada have discovered that consuming the tasty offerings from a number of fast food restaurants affect the flow of blood to the heart. Co-author Dr. Todd Anderson, director of the University of Calgary’s Libin Cardiovascular Institute of Alberta, explained that any unhealthy food could disrupt the function of blood vessels.
“Even one episode of eating something unhealthy can have an effect and cumulatively, that can have an effect. Think before you eat,” Dr. Anderson warned.
While the research is still considered preliminary, the data suggests that avoiding calorie-heavy breakfast sandwiches in the morning could help keep your heart healthy.
According to US News and World Report, the purpose of the study was to determine the effect that high-fat foods have on blood vessels.
Researchers rounded up 20 healthy people with a median age of 23. Some of the participants consumed fast food break sandwiches while the others refrained from eating anything. Compared to the folks with empty stomachs, those who ate the fatty foods experienced a drop in blood vessel efficiency.
Since the study did not address what happens to blood vessel activity when someone eats a healthy breakfast, experts have explained that folks should take the results with a grain of salt.
“It’s hard to say how one specific food impacts a person’s risk for health problems. With nutrition there are so many variables that can be changed,” explained Chris Fahs, a graduate assistant at the University of Oklahoma’s department of health. “Too much of any one food will probably have negative consequences in the long term, but eating that food in combination with other foods which meet a person’s nutritional needs may not have same impact on the vascular system.”
If you’re looking for a break from the fast food grind, then experts suggest replacing the unhealthy breakfast food with such offerings as peanut butter and banana sandwiches, egg and avocado sandwiches, or turkey, cheddar, and guacamole sandwiches.
