San Antonio, TX (AHN) – Still dealing with scheduling problems, the LPGA tour took a major blow this week after Anheuser-Busch announced that it was dropping the Michelob Ultra Open at Kingsmill in Williamsburg, Va., after seven years.

The St. Louis-based Anheuser-Busch, owned by Belgium-based Anheuser-Busch InBev, announced Monday it is not renewing its sponsorship of the Michelob event.

The Michelob tourney, one of the Tour’s marquee events, is considered as one of the richest events on the schedule with a $2.2 million purse.

Despite being regarded by players as the best overall with an overwhelming nod from supporters for its family hospitality, the six-year-old Open will not be returning to the acclaimed Kingsmill Resort & Spa at Colonial Williamsburg.

The Belgian-owned company is not totally leaving the LPGA as it continues to hold talks as the organization’s official beer sponsor.

The beer sponsorship deal between Anheuser-Busch and the LPGA expires at the end of the year.

At present, the number of tournaments left on the Tour’s 2010 schedule is 17. It is about half the number the organization had on its 2008 slate.
