Miami, FL (AHN) – A new study by a leading childhood psychiatrist strongly recommends that mental health professionals distinguish between adolescent depression and anxiety disorders.

Dr. William W. Hale, a researcher at the Langeveld Institute for the Study of Education and Development in Childhood and Adolescence at Utrecht University, and his colleagues conducted a five-year study of secondary school adolescents.

The team concluded that while anxiety and depression were strongly related to each other, the conditions are two distinct disorders.

The study appears in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry.
