Hollyweed: Hollywood Sign Vandal Reportedly Comes Forward, Says He Did It For Jesus

The anonymous New Year’s Day “prank” that made the Hollywood sign “Hollyweed” is one step closer to no longer being anonymous. Someone has come forward on Instagram to sign his name on the act of vandalism, and he says he did it in Jesus’ name. Zach Fernandez, who has quite a social media footprint, goes by the name Jesushands.

But it seems like the timing of the Hollywood/Hollyweed prank was not a coincidence, as it happened on the day that recreational marijuana became legal in California. This means that carrying and using personal use amounts of marijuana, including edibles, is acceptable now under the law, and it sounds like Jesushands was celebrating.

However, according to the Inquisitr, people may want to watch out for the edibles, because in terms of THC content, they can be weaker or stronger than labeled, and as of yet, there is no agency holding companies responsible for accurate labeling.

TMZ says that Zach Fernandez slapped his signature on the transformed Hollywood/Hollyweed sign, but he says he is giving all credit to Jesus. Fernandez, who goes by Jesushands on social media, posted a photo of the stunt with the caption “In all its glory,” giving props to his Lord and savior.

People from around the world are giving props to Jesushands, and he is acknowledging the praise, labeling the as a successful mission. Police are still searching for the vandal, but the charges are not as stiff as one might think; for now, the charge is misdemeanor trespassing.

Although the Hollywood/Hollyweed sign prank seems timely, Vanity Fair says that it’s not original. On New Year’s Day in 1976, the Hollywood sign was changed to Hollyweed. In both cases, the sign was quickly changed back to Hollywood from Hollyweed, as the changes were simply made with white tarps so no permanent damage was done.

The original act of vandalism was done by Hollywood resident Daniel N. Finegood, who took responsibility for making the Hollywood sign “Hollyweed.” But Finegood didn’t learn a lesson, and he continued with his crew to make changes to the sign here and there. During the Iran-Contra hearings, when Oliver North testified, they changed it to read “Ollywood,” and when the pope visited in 1987, they changed it to “Holywood.”

Finegood first got the idea when he was an art major in college, and he did the change as a smaller scale model reading “Hollyweed” for a class. When he finally did it for real, he tipped off the media himself.

But a group that is responsible for the preservation of the sign, called the Hollywood Sign Trust, says that people might think it’s funny, but climbing the Hollywood sign is dangerous. Chairman Chris Baumgart says that they will have to beef up security to keep people off the sign.

“This is more than preventing pranks or trespassing at the sign. Our concern is the safety of the neighborhood and the trespassers that put themselves at risk because it is extremely unsafe to be on the sign, let alone traversing the treacherous hillside that is home to those 9 famous letters.”

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Baumgart states that in addition to the sign being dangerous, it is also perilous to haul that many tarps up the Santa Monica Mountains in order to cover all of the letters. Baumgart says this recent prank let the organization know that there is more work to do.

“The Hollywood Sign surveillance system is constantly evolving but an incident like the one that occurred early Sunday morning shows us where there are opportunities to make improvements.”

But while people in the world of social media continue to give props to Jesushands, or whoever did the Hollywood/Hollyweed stunt, the LAPD have still made no arrests.

Do you think this is a harmless prank or a criminal act?
